The forecast for Friday (2/10) was gorgeous, with a forecast for cloudy, and potentially snowy, weather over the weekend. So I had to go hiking on Friday, even though my body needed a bit more rest after a strenuous (for me ) hike on Wednesday. The compromise was to hike Mt. Pemi, an easy hike close to home with great hardwoods and decent views from the summit.
The weather was indeed as good as forecast, and soon my fleece jacket, hat and gloves were in my pack. I hiked slowly (still tired) but the trip was short, and I soon was on the south facing ledge. The views to the south were surprisingly hazy for a winter day, so I quickly continued to the summit. Trees have grown there, and one has to move around to get good views of the Franconia peaks across the road. I took a few pictures, had a snack, and started on my way down.
On the way down I was impressed with the views of the Franconia peaks through the lace curtain made by the branches of the leafless hardwoods. I had no really good views of Mounts Lincoln and Lafayette (too many trees in the way), and Mount Liberty had too little snow on it to be interesting. But I took many pictures on Mount Flume, with its snowy slides. Few were any good but I like this one:
Back at the parking lot I had a sandwich on the picnic bench in the sun, and discovered that I still had a wee bit of energy left. It seemed a pity to waste it on such a gorgeous day, so I decided to go up to Sentiel Pine Bridge and The Pool, going clockwise from the Bike Path. There is a bench with a great view of Mount Liberty:
Is the white line running down the side of the mountain a slide?
I ended the trip on the bridge, with an excellent view of The Pool:
