    Tips for the new Dog

I have a Border Collie/Australian Shepard mix & weighs about 40 pounds. I've hiked with him in all four seasons. We've been hiking together for the past two years. I debated booties and a coat for him but he hasn't shown any signs of needing them so I haven't bought them. The longest hike we've...

Mt Carrigain via Signal Ridge Trail 11/17

Returned to one of my favorite peaks Saturday. We were the first ones in the parking lot at 7AM.The first two miles went by pretty quick.Nice warm up and a chance to shake the 4am wake up cobwebs out. We got bypassed by a couple with a very energetic yellow lab at the junction of Carrigain Notch...

    The Ritual

I love the ritual of preparing for a hike almost as much (I said "almost") as the hike itself. Mine goes something like this: 1. Pour a beer 2. Empty pack & double check basics-i.e. extra clothes, head lamp, spare batteries, compass, etc. 3. Put the clothes I intend to wear, along with any...

    Thermos

I've been using a Stanley thermos for a couple of years with no issues yet. One for beverages and a wide mouth one for stews/chili. (I don't travel light;)-but I am comfy)

Hiking Food Suggestions for Winter, Above Treeline

I have a wide mouth thermos & put in hot chili, stew or something similar. It weighs a little more but it is worth it. Nothing better than a hot meal on a cold summit.

    Heel lifts on snowshoes

I use them on the steepest ascents and like them. They take a good deal of stress off my calves. I have a pair of Tubbs Flex Alps. They have an aggressive crampon style base. The beauty of them is they work well in snow and on ice so I don't have to do a lot of changing throughout a hike. The...

    The Rules

Didn't mean it to come off as trivial when I said "just visited". I know that all of the summits are hard fought. Just curious if that thought occurred to anyone else thats all. Nice to see another Barringtonite on here!

    The Rules

Looks like I'm a natural born Trailwright and didn't even know it! Thanks for the info on that. Did not know about Trailwrights.org. I think the grid might be out of my comfort zone but who knows. If I could ever quit working for a living...!

    Crampons for Non Rigid Boots

Looking for advice on crampons that will work best with a pair of Columbia Bugaboots. I've been using the Hillsound Trail Crampon Pro but I'd like to get something more agressive.

    The Rules

I did not mean it to be condescending at all. Just curious if anyone had similar thoughts on summitting more than one peak via a ridge. I don't feel too strongly one way or the other. It's just one of those things that has been kicking around in the recesses of my mind. The only real goal I have...

    The Rules

Not saying either is right or wrong. I'd say any hiking is right. I'm a couple hours away myself.

    The Rules

Oh you could find plenty I do wrong. Not trying to be a jerk, I just feel the way I feel. I still like the idea of the 4000 footer club and will get it done. My love of the hills trumps any list anyway. The rules are the rules and I'm ok with them. I just wondered if anyone else felt the same...

    The Rules

Thanks Mohamed! I thought I was alone in thinking that way. I have been approaching it that way but always wondered if anyone else thought the same way.

    The Rules

Right. That makes sense. Did not think of it that way. But I think if you climb say North Hancock and then bag South Hancock, you really did not "climb" South Hancock you really only climbed North Hancock. You just "visited" South Hancock. I've been approaching my list with that in mind. Just...

    The Rules

When I first became aware of the 4000 footer club and read the rules, there was one thing that bugged me. The fact that two peaks (or more) can be bagged by combining them in one hike via a ridge does not seem right to me. Am I alone in thinking that each peak should be tackled as a singular...
