That's the way I did it a couple of winters ago.

Herd Path Questions For North And South Twin

I think you're right and it's about 1.2 miles to the summer trailhead. As for the herd path along North Twin trail that skips the first two river crossings, I've only been on it in winter as far as the Firewarden's trail but it's not tricky up to that point; there was one spot where some of us...

Which Trails Get Broken Out The Fastest In The Whites

Meetup.com. Sign up, enter your zip, enter a location and expand the search radius as far out as it will go, and search for 'Hiking'. You'll find many groups such as Random hikers, New England hiking group, 4 Seasons group, etc. They all do hikes just about every weekend so you can get a...

    Moosilauke, 2/15/2014

Nice report Earl. I always hear that the "standard winter route" to Moosilauke is via Glencliff trail. Have you taken this approach in winter, and if so, what is it about the Beaver Brook approach that you like better? It seems like the steepness would slow you down more than Glencliff, even...

Squam Lake trails - Cotton Mountain - Sunday 2/16 or Bald Peak/Artist Bluff ?

No idea as to whether those will broken out but you might want to consider West Rattlesnake, which is near Cotton Mtn. That's a very popular hike in the other 3 seasons, not sure about winter, but I would think it has a better chance of being broken out than Cotton Mtn.

Photo of the start of the Firewarden's trail to Mt Hale

Did a hike yesterday on the Firewarden's trail to Mt. Hale. We didn't end up summiting due to a late start but I figured I would post a picture of the start of the Firewardens's trail. The skinny tree in the middle of the trail seems to be the best visual marker. The trail turns to the left...

hale via firewardens trail saturday feb 8

I guess hikerfast didn't trust me when I said I could find the trail (I did this hike last winter). Well, at least we'll have Kyle D's tracks to follow so my memory and route-finding skills won't have to be put to the test. :D

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

I don't hesitate to hike solo in the late spring, summer, or early fall, although I do prefer company on any hike. When the conditions start to get icy or snowy, if I hike solo I will usually try to do something more popular, like Mt. Pierce. I seem to be in the minority of people here (not...

No Franconia Ridge for me, just the folks in jeans (Falling Waters falls after snow)

Thought I would add some comments even though I realize this thread is over 2 months old. I ran into a similar situation a couple of summers ago where I came across a hiker that was clearly unprepared for what was ahead. He was on a backpacking trip with his son and carrying more than I've ever...

Hiking Part II - First hike in the new home (Utah!)

Beautiful - looks like another planet compared to the White Mountains.

    crampon hints for downhill

My suggestion (and I'm not trying to be sarcastic) is to just avoid extremely steep trails like this in icy conditions. I turned around on my first attempt at East Osceola just due to loose, slippery snow, and went back the next winter in better snow conditions, and had no problems. I love...

Boston Globe Article - Winter 4000 footers

On the one and only hike I did with Ed Hawkins, in 2008, there just happened to be a Globe reporter and photographer along that day. I thought the resulting article on grid hike was pretty good. http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/articles/2008/12/06/grid_hikers_take_on_48_40000_ft_mountains/?page=full

Boston Globe Article - Winter 4000 footers

Crappy and just not accurate. I've had winter hikes that had better weather than some fall or spring hikes. Last season I hiked to Moosilauke two days before the official end of winter, in 45-degree weather. Hardly the "most dangerous" conditions.

Why Is My Backpack So Much Bigger Than Yours?

I'm kind of on the hunt for a new winter pack but for now I'm going to try using my Kelty Redwing for winter hikes. I can't remember the exact model but it's under 3,000 CI. Fits everything I have for winter but it's pretty cramped. I do know what you mean about seeing people with tiny...

    Ammonoosuc in the winter

The person that fell was only wearing Stabilicers and she wasn't heavy enough for them to dig into the snow too well. There were in fact two falls that were nearly fatal within a few minutes of each other; in one, there was only one last tree between her and a slide into the ravine, and luckily...

    Looping The Willey Range, 12/28/2013

Nice report Earl. Of all the winter hikes I've done, hiking the Willey Range with you and Jennifer is one of my most memorable trips...coming down the backside of Mt. Willey over the buried ladders in unbroken snow is something you can never forget. ;)

    Ammonoosuc in the winter

After seeing a person almost slide to certain death a few years ago on the Ammo Ravine trail (snowy conditions in May), this post interests me since I have no desire to descend that trail again in the snow. I still need to do Monroe thru Washington in winter. Using the route mentioned by...

    Kinsmans - Preferred Winter Approach??

I've been there in winter both by the Lonesome Lake/Fishin' Jimmy route and the Mt. Kinsman/Kinsman Ridge trail route (twice), and I prefer the Mt. Kinsman route. It may technically come in at more elevation gain but the Mt. Kinsman trail has more of a steady, mellow grade than the route over...

Well so much for barebooting some early winter 4Ks

I'll be happy if I can put on my snowshoes at the start of a hike. Hate carrying those things!
