When will be Tuckerman Ravine Trail open?

Someone else on another forum was asking this question, so I called PNVC this morning (7/1) and they said the trail was just recently opened.

North Moat on a fabulous view day 6-18-10

Nice report. I was on nearby Chocorua Friday, and it sure felt hotter than 78 degrees, even on the summit! I'm headed for the Moats next Sunday, hoping for a less hazy view...

    Most comfortable sleeping pads

I've got one of those Big Agnes pads like the one mentioned by Vegematic. It may or may not be obvious, but generally a 2.5-inch self-inflating pad is going to be heavier than a 2.5-inch pad that you have to inflate on your own...which is why I like the Big Agnes pad. I need the extra cushion...

Speed Limit Change in Franconia Notch

That's good news. Now, instead of going 20 mph over the speed limit, I'll only be going over by 10.

    More $75 tickets in WMNF

That's a good point about it being a no-parking area vs. a fee area. Forget what I said before! =)

Missing hiker in the western Whites

The missing hiker (Peter Murphy) posted the following comment over on the hike-nh forum. The link is here but I don't know how to link directly to his post, which is under user ID pmurphy. I've cut-and-pasted his comments below. I'm impressed that he took the time to post, and he seems to be...

    Cape Wind article

Can't we just produce energy by harnessing the heating effects of global warming?

    More $75 tickets in WMNF

I completely agree that the amount is excessive. I think a $25-30 fine is enough to send a message and stop people from parking there. Honestly, I think some people are unaware of the winter lot that's just a short ways down the street. That might sound crazy but I am one of the stupid people...

Missing hiker in the western Whites

His sister posted a frantic message on the hike-nh.com forum (which bikehikeskifish linked to above), asking for "avid hikers" to help out in the search. She had already called state police but didn't think they were sending out a rescue team (most likely, they were assembling a team and she...

    Spring 48?

Define "good". :) Honestly, I would just do the shortest trip if I were you - Mt. Jackson. These spring conditions can be brutal. Second choice would be Tri-Pyramids via Pine Bend Brook trail. You'd want to avoid Sabbady Brook trail at this time of year due to potential stream crossing...

Snow, in the White Mountains, in April?!? It's shocking! :D

Descending the Dudley Trail - Katahdin

I haven't even been on Katahdin but I've been in Baxter twice, and at least had planned to do Katahdin so I did some research on the different routes. If your wife wants to go up Katahdin but avoid the extra exposure, you could go up via Chimney Pond to Hamlin peak first, then over to Baxter...

    Discovering Mt. Major

Nice report Ed. I had been to Mt. Major 4 times before finally deciding to go a little further, so last week I took a trip to Mt. Major, Straightback and Anna. Like you, I've discovered that there are a lot of great hikes out there that are under 4,000 feet.

Skookumchuk trailhead to OBP/Falling Waters trailhead - by bike?

Thanks everyone. Chip, I actually did do a search for this info and found that site you linked to, I just couldn't figure if the northern terminus of the path was at the Skook trailhead - even with the map provided. Thanks for confirming, Doug. And Mohammed, how could I not think to go to...
