Skookumchuk trailhead to OBP/Falling Waters trailhead - by bike?

Is it possible to ride a bike from the Skookumchuk trailhead to the northern part of the Franconia Notch bike path? I know where the Skookumchuk trailhead is from driving past it many times, but I don't know if it's possible to reach the northern part of the bike path without getting on the...

State putting a Toll Gate on the Kanc.

I just registered one of my cars this morning and got hit with a $45 "surcharge" that I was told was added to "balance the NH state budget". I need someone to help my balance my own budget.

care to discuss your winter day/climbing pack ?

Good topic. I've been thinking about getting a new winter pack for the next winter season. I've been using an EMS-brand pack (can't remember the model name, and it's discontinued) for the past 2 winters. My favorite feature is the "shovit" pocket on the back, because I can put my snowshoes in...

    disorientation at Pawtuckaway SP

Not afraid to admit it. On my second trip there we tried to do a loop over North Pawtuckaway (which I had done in the other direction the first time), and got lost for about 30 minutes trying to find the right trail down. Lots of confusing blazes of different colors didn't help.

Is GPS just a 'Stupid Guy Thing?'

Perhaps. I have a Garmin E-Trex Legend. Not exactly a top-of-the-line model, and now a discontinued product.

Is GPS just a 'Stupid Guy Thing?'

I have to admit I got one mostly as a toy, but also as an expensive altimeter. Stopped using the piece of junk when it couldn't keep a signal for 75% of the time I was in the woods, and bought a barometric altimeter. $150 down the drain - now that's stupid.

    AMC Awards Dinner on 4/10

I'll be there, mostly as a good excuse to avoid going to another party I've been invited to that day. :D I'll also be getting the scroll for finishing the 48...already got the patch in the mail.

Suggestions for an easy hike in Northeast MA

A few years ago I did a hike with my kids to Odiorne Point, which is right in Rye. It's also a state park. Nice ocean views, and you can make a loop around Odiorne Point. I can't find much detailed info online regarding the hike itself, but I learned about this in the book "Hiking New...

    # 15 and 16

You'll very likely have a tough time on Sabbaday Brook trail at this time of year with all of the stream crossings, especially with this extra-warm weather. Use Pine Bend Brook trail if you really want to hike the Tri-Pyramids. Hancocks trip also has 5 stream crossings, but you can stay to the...

Windsor & Brownsville trail to Ascutney

Date: 3/19/10 Trails: Windsor, Brownville (just the section near the summit) Conditions: Bare ground for first 0.8 miles, then wet and very soft snow for the rest of the way up. Comments: Soft snow and spring-like conditions made for a difficult hike. The trail is a mess of postholes, and...

Weekend backpacks and lower back issues

Interesting comments here. I'm currently experiencing some pain in my leg that - just as mentioned in the comment by Wildpeaks - goes from the top of my leg and right down to my foot. I'm figuring it's back-related since I have scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and have had life-long back...

    iHikeGPS for iPhone and iPad

I can't really see this affecting Garmin that much. Do that many people have an iPhone, really? Of course, if you already have an iPhone, it's certainly a neat application. But the cheapest service plan from AT&T is $69.99 a month...that's a lot more than the zero dollars I'd pay if I were...

BB Contact crampons- on regular boots?

Those will be fine on flexible boots, I have those crampons and wear Merrell Thermo 6 boots in the winter. The trick is that you need to slide the bar on the bottom of them out of one of the slots, so it's just held there by one slot, not both. You'd only have that bar in both slots if you were...

What I Liked About My Hike to North & South Kinsman (05-Mar-2010)

Very nice! I had to go to N. Kinsman three times before I realized you could step off that lookout ledge and go down to a lower ledge to get a better view of Kinsman Pond. Love the alpenglow photo.
