FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

Charles Muntz signed the lease on behalf of RPI (Renewable Properties, Inc.). Hmm … we all know what happened to the last Charles Muntz:

Fastest way to the Caps Ridge Trailhead from the South

Coming up 302 I would say that it's probably faster, and definitely easier on your car, to overshoot to Base Road back to Jefferson Notch Road. Mt Clinton Road is a nasty mess of potholes and frost heaves in the pavement. You can go far faster on 302 and Base Road it seems worth it to me...

    Maple syrup

Is this Pinestead's sugar shack off the Mt Kinsman Trail? Does anyone know where you can get the maple syrup from the extensive array of taps and tubing one sees going in from the Appalachia trailhead? It all appears to come down to this tank:

    Maple syrup

Real grade A light amber maple syrup is not very viscous and has a rather delicate flavor. It is nothing like the "syrup" from Mrs. Butterworth or Aunt Jemima. There are also medium and dark ambers, which get progressively darker and thicker. Grade B is even stronger. Get yourself hiking in VT...

    Thermos

I have had wonderful success with the LL Bean 16oz stainless steel vacuum bottles. I've found my soup or cocoa still scalding hot several hours into the hike up on the summit. Tempering (pre-filling with hot water to warm up the inside) is key. Mine is an older generation, here's what LL Bean...

    Keeping photos on camera

Oddly enough, I went the other way around, from using a vacuum-loading-self-threading 9-track tape drive to back up Sun workstations as an undergrad, to using DEC TK50 tapes to back up my research from my department's DECStation as a grad student. I tried various tape solutions for home in the...

WMNF Alerts & Notices – Read 'em or weep

Seems a lot of these are just the orders behind the Wilderness and FPA regulations. I do find it amusing that there had to be an order prohibiting "parking or leaving a vehicle in violation of posted instructions." Seems kinda redundant. Also, "Being publicly nude" seems kinda of vague to me...

Water Availability halfway between Moosilauke summit, Beaver brook and Asquam Trail

I don't remember any there. The loop you're proposing is really nice.

    Keeping photos on camera

Photos come home with me and immediately get transferred onto both the laptop and the desktop. One of them is then the designated workplace for dealing with those photos, and when I'm done with the album, everything gets consolidated on the desktop. On long trips, I take the laptop and transfer...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

Don't get me wrong - I have always complained about "returning to Wilderness" attitudes. If it's an actual designated trail, then it should be maintained to the trail standards for the area that it's in. That doesn't mean, to me, ever leaving trails to sink into the swamp or be overrun by...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

Thanks, Ed. I did the EO slide only once ever, and that was in winter in near-whiteout conditions. I actually have no idea what it looks like! Well, I hate to say it, but …*we as hikers have no right or entitlement to a safer, faster, or easier route to a peak out in the National Forest. For...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

With proper traction & self-arrest device, plus a willingness to turn back if it's solid ice, that slide can easily be passed in one to two dozen steps. I don't remember the circumstances of the injured person. Also, when I've been on it, it's always been broken out to a reasonably level walking...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

For what it's worth, the time window's plenty if you just want to tag D, since A is easily accessible from Carter Notch via 19 Mile Brook. My suspicion is that will become more popular and the ridge will be less traversed. Spend Saturday doing A, overnight somewhere, grab D Sunday morning and be...

    Rt. 16 closed?

This happens all the time. The "location" of the closure is on Rte 16, because that's where Pinkham B road comes out and it's gated right near there, as opposed to other roads with several miles open before a gate. It really comes down to who does the data entry into the road status computer system.

    Sandy Damage Thread

Yes. When I went in to the former Spruce Brook Shelter it was 150cfs and I lay on a rock in the middle of the river (where I walked with dry feet) filtering. The next day it was 5,000cfs and the ground was rumbling. Spruce Brook and Cypress Brook were also impassable. The brook crossing right at...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

Cannon has a formal policy of no hiking on the ski trails. Given that there are three different routes up it (Kinsman Notch Trail from two different sides, and Hi-Cannon Trail) it's not a big deal. Note that KRT from the north does switchback through a ski glade and caution is required if that's...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

Ed, you beat me to it! Yup, the threat of having the hike not count is probably the one most would take serious. That's both humorous and sad at the same time.

    Sandy Damage Thread

It's neat to look at the hydrographs and see how much warmer the rivers got when all this rainwater flooded into them. 7000cfs in the Wild, no way anyone's getting out there for a couple days!

Hurricane Sandy Alert from the Forest Service

Oh, don't remind me …*that was one scary river crossing, and Spider Bridge isn't even there any more!
