    "Traditional" Route To Skylight

Coming from Elk Lake, backpacked up Panther Gorge. Stayed at the former Four Corners leanto between Skylight and Gray. Then Basin-Saddleback, staying at old Snowbird Leanto. Then out over the rest of the Range Trail to KV. Spectacular route but you'd have to drop down to legal camping elevation.

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

With the splash and spray from water it was a little intimidating in one place but as TCD noted, the holds are pretty good. I found the slabs sticky enough and not much different that some of the other ADK slides. There are a couple of problems with the Trap Dike. In cool Fall weather there is...

Split Rock Mt, Adirondacks, black morph Timber Rattlesnake. Very Grumpy. Struck at the person right ahead of me who almost knocked me over jumping back.

    NH Rattlesnakes Article

I'm one of the fire tower stewards on Overlook Mt, Catskills. There are dens on and around it. I see them all the time. Always concerned that too-specific photo locations are not good for their safety.

    Backpacking/Climbing Knives of the 1960s, 70s and 80s?

I received a red, Swiss Army knife as a wedding present. Still have it. Replaced as a hike-carry with a variety of multitools, including one very large one too heavy to carry in the field. The small, micro-tools all have needle-nosed pliers and I've dequilled my last dog 7x and those of others...

    Looking for a softshell

Joe, looking to replace my wife's. She doesn't need a super duper one, but a shell that will keep her warm for a few hours out with our dog on the windy golf course.

    Heated Mitts / Gloves Question

Those dog walks are usually five exposed miles on a windy golf course. 2-3 hours coming from our home. For me heavy duty outer mitts with thick wool liners and chemical hand warmers work.

    Looking for a softshell

Finding a softshell under $200 has been a challenge. Mountain Hardwear and OR used to make models that fit the bill. Now, they are big bucks or super thin stretchy fabric that are more appropriate as rain gear. Earlier this year I sent my 15 year old Mountain Hardware back under warranty to fix...

    Heated Mitts / Gloves Question

With cold weather coming, following up to see what people think of the heated gloves/mitts they've used. This is for a family member who will use them for 3 hours at a time out in the open on dog walks. Regular mitts with handwarmers so far still leave the Raynauds fingers less than ideal...

    NE111 Roster, patches and decals

Completer #142, Camel's Hump October '85. At that time finishers received a nice, spiral-bound roster with names, peaks and finisher number. In the back, a section with each finisher's 'biography' and a separate section for winter finishers. Albert Robertson was in charge at the time and he sent...

AMC is paying for promotion on Google

I was an ADK committee chair. Over my tenure, the membership list was closely held to avoid members feeling their information was being shared. Don't think that has changed.
