Looking for hiking partner(s) for epic summer eclipse trip

Bring sunscreen. Sounds like a great trip. I'll be in Nashville, where the cloud probability is higher, but there are many more options for moving to clear skies. That, and backpacking an 8-inch 'scope isn't in the cards. :D

Trail litter-Do you pick it up?

I pick up the small bits, and the larger ones if I'm on the way out. The interesting thing about masses of trash is that you'll usually soon find a plastic bag that will hold a bunch of it. Nature provides.

If you had 3 days in the Grand Canyon & Sedona, what would be your MUST DO's?

There's been little discussion about cuisine. While this is Arizona, the official state question of New Mexico is "Red or green?". The color of the chile sauce can apply to any meal, from fried eggs to tacos. Start by responding, "Christmas". You'll get both, one on each side of your meal...

    Books for holidays

Ditto that. A month ago I heard from one who would know that the draft of the next edition was due in a week, and the publish date was spring 2017. He also had current information on lesser-known trails west of Kinsman Notch. Yeah, one who would know.

    Waumbek/Cabot traverse this weekend

I hiked from York Pond Trail to Jefferson this summer, and found it easy going, albeit without views on the Weeks. As others said, it may be problematic with snow. And I personally would not do 6000+ feet elevation gain and 14+ miles in summer, let alone winter. Of course, your group may be...

    "Real" Mountain Vacation

Lot of good suggestions. I can personally vouch for Wheeler Peak (get down by 2pm to avoid thunderstorms). Plenty of easy hikes in Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, all accessible from Las Vegas. Yellowstone and Grand Teton are a half day drive from Salt Lake City. Cascade Canyon in Grand Teton...

What is the true summit of South Kinsman?

See beginning at post 35 http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?42274-Concerning-NH-4000-footer-peak-bagging/page3&highlight=Kinsman+true+summit and post 7 http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?13289-North-Kinsman-s-true-summit&highlight=south+summit So the south knob is likely higher...

Tunnel Brook Trail and Cliffs of Clough (30-Jun-2010)

What took ya so long, erb? Love your pics. remind me of my only visit to the area, last summer. My only complaint is that your 3rd pic is upside down! ;)

    Trail Magic and Stratton Mountain

Two comments: 1. Thank you for your angelic efforts. 2. The northbound trail to Stratton is this summer part of the green mountain adventure challenge. Lots of weekend warriors will be climbing Stratton for the sole purpose of counting the steps to the fire tower. Yeah, I was one last weekend...

    Woman defaces multiple national parks.....ugh.

This gets my vote. Jail time is too severe, so hit her where it counts! Some people feel so entitled that their personal needs trump everyone else's. The logical conclusion: Hey, the street in front of your house is public property. What could I possibly draw there? Let's hope she uses one of...

    Loyalsock-Link Loop

Beautiful! This is the type of gem I look for when on a business trip or on a cross-country trip where I have a few hours to spare. OK, that's not 17.5 miles worth, but enough for a couple miles to a highlight.

    The AMC in Maine

Yes, I ran amok. Further research shows a middle ground. The "AMC 100 Mile Wilderness" appears to encompass the middle 40% of the AT 100 Mile Wilderness (Monson to Abol Bridge). Yes, that's very cool. No, that's not THE 100 Mile Wilderness. Note: other AT maps differ. Zooming in with...

    The AMC in Maine

Shame on AMC! Shame on Google! According to wikipedia: An increasing amount of the adjoining lands are being protected by groups like the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Nature Conservancy. There's nothing about all of the adjoining lands. Without uncommon knowledge and a healthy skepticism...

Weekly Email For NH and ME Like DEC's NY Email?

For distress calls, the WMG states "In emergencies, call 911 or the toll-free New Hampshire State Police number (800-525-5555)." I don't know about Maine. One-stop help numbers are apparently in response to highly publicized instances where appropriate aid was delivered in a less than timely...
