    Winter camping with a dog?

Sled racing and activities like the Iditarod are a world away from winter hiking. Each is tougher than the other in certain ways. Our hiker-dogs do not have the safety of veterinary evaluations and regular check points along the way. I can't agree with Griffin's statement strongly enough -...

    Bird and Moth ID

How 'bout this guy? He's perched on a screen. I can't remember how big he was - maybe at least 1" x 1" - I could go back and measure the screen grid.

    Gear review - dog stuff

Are there any watery routes to help keep the pooches from overheating?

    Gear review - dog stuff

Hee! How 'bout one for only dogs named Boo?! Seriously, I wouldn't mind seeing Greylock again. As long as the hike was limited to a smaller number of dogs it could be fun.

    Gear review - dog stuff

Growth plates and skeletal maturity are an issue with all dogs - not just large dogs and not just purebreds. It's just that generally, the larger the dog, the older they are before they're physically mature. Peakbagr - Boo? I didn't mean to copy your naming idea! We brought home a second dog...

    Gear review - dog stuff

Ruffwear gear is generally good stuff. However, I have one thing I don't like about the harness. The rear strap is positioned under the abdomen of most dogs, behind the ribs where the abdomen is less protected. Be very, very careful to lift gently and for not very long. According to a vet I...

Getting to the Trailhead; My MPG experiment !!

Not to be a scofflaw, but how could someone outside the car know if you're in gear as opposed to neutral?

Getting to the Trailhead; My MPG experiment !!

I find I tend to get slightly better mileage when I'm driving, as opposed to using cruise control. I'm still not understanding an earlier comment (not sure if it was in this thread) about keeping a car in gear versus shifting into neutral for a long downslope. I know I'm not nearly as car...

Emergency ID bracelet is a good idea

The same can be said of companion animals and microchips. Is there a safety issue? No one seems to be sure.

I think we saw some evidence of moose-chewed trees on that hike too. Either way big surprise... moose and porkies in Vermont? Who'd've thought?!

It was still a great route in the winter - a lot of ice that because of snowmobile travel that not even the MSR snowshoes could securely bite into. IIRC, another hiker with Kahtoola Microspikes fared the best, traction wise.

    Gas and holiday weekend hiking

I chalk it up to idiot drivers. With my MA route 2 commute, accidents seem to increase sharply following major holidays. I've seen at least one on every commute this week - and I'm counting morning and evening separately. The high was 5 on the Wednesday pm. I swear, people miss one day and...

    Gas and holiday weekend hiking

 Well, strike the Highlander Hybrid from my list. I don't need to carry 7 people, but I'd been considering the Highlander because we have 2 large dogs and do like to ride with them in crates, which takes up significant space. My Forester (1 crate + 2 passengers or 1 dog seatbelted + 3...

    Mustard and/or Mayo in tubes?

Like all the other perishables stored in cans and jars, as long as the container has formed a good seal, it's safe.

As always, consider the safety of all of your companion animals when treating them or your house for pests. I would not use permethrin because it is highly toxic to the cats in my home.
