What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

Chip beat me to it! :D "Just keep swimming" from Finding Nemo..... I use it in my own head and I give the same advice to students. I think it helps me more than it helps them. I also just put songs that get up me up in my head when things are becoming a slog out on the trail or if I'm feeling...

Garfield on Friday - Open invite

Hmmmmm, Garfield would interest me as well. I'll be checking on your plans late tomorrow. Chris

Paddling at Forillon National Parc, Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec (August 2012)

I have always wanted to visit and hike the Gaspe Peninsula. Combing paddling with a visit to the area had never occurred to me. Now it is high on the list of places I need to get to once I finish my most recent degree program and have landed a teaching position. Your shots and description...

    Man vs Women

I'm glad I don't need to go on and on here, because Mr. Metsky took the words right out of my mouth. Nuf said!

Franconia Ridge Traverse or Zealand/Bonds Traverse 9/27 or 9/28

Seeing as this hike is today, and I sit here at 1am working on a 6 page paper on gender equity in science education, I will sadly not be able to make it :(. Not that I ever held much hope, but a girl can dream, right? ;) Hope the weather holds for you and that you have a superb day on all...

trying to find the name of a book

Thank you Barkingcat! I don't get many opportunities to see Tom these days, so that is going on my calendar immediately. I have nothing else to add, other than to say that if you think his books are awesome, imagine walking through woods and wetlands with him throughout entire semesters for a...

    Cougar Photographed in W. NH

If this is the best that people who swear they are here have, then I am curious how anyone could wonder why the vast majority of the scientific community is skeptical.

    energy bars

Overall I have trouble eating a whole lot while hiking unless hiking all day, in which case I don't have much of a choice. Now that I am gluten free, there isn't a lot out there, but one of the gluten-free choices is, I think, quite good. I like LaraBars, but I have to be careful because I...

    Mtn. Lion Photos ??

Yes evidence: of a single animal roaming 2, 000 miles (a Western cougar, different genetically from Eastern Cougars) and perhaps a few incidences of captive South American lions having been released into the wild.

    Kayak Stand

Nice work! I used two old sawhorses and added some flexible plastic sheeting in a U shape with some screws so that I can get my boat to sit within, upside down. It works nicely for me.

    chicken mushroom?

Sulphur Shelf, also called Chicken of the Woods. You can absolutely freeze this one with almost no change to the taste, you don't even have to par-boil it first, as you would want to with most other mushrooms. Get it fast; it's not a young specimen.

    Please ID this mushroom

Interesting. It looks much less fleshy than your assessment that it looked "delicious" would suggest. If it is even the general type of mushroom it appears to be (a polypore) it would not likely be the least bit yummy. I may have to do a bit more research to pin down species, but I do think...

    Please ID this mushroom

Tell me more about it, if you would. It appears to be on long-dead rotting wood; is that correct? Did it look quite old and decaying (the mushroom itself, I mean)? It does not appear fresh to me, but it would help if you could tell me more about how it appeared to you. Could be one of the...

Hi Stan, I wanted to say thanks for your input about places to paddle. I would like to head out on the Charles at some point, but typically when I am in Cambridge I am sitting in front of a computer or in a classroom, so this just hasn't happened yet. I love Gloucester, and have a friend that...

Thanks for the input on places to paddle. I have indeed found the Shawsheen challenging in the past :D . The Ipswich has always seemed like it would be equally as challenging due to low water levels particularly during summer. The Topsfield/Danvers area isn't far, though, so I might just...

Hi Doug, The river guides in the link you attached to your reply are absolutely fantastic. I really appreciate you chiming in. I will definitely be exploring at least 1 of the two this summer. Thank you so much again.

Thanks for the Nashua River access info! Interestingly, I think I may have canoed there with kids when I was working at Merrimack River Watershed Council 8 or 9 years ago. We only did it once, but it sounds very familiar. I don't think it will be hard for me to find the put-in. Nashua is...

Looking for places to kayak in S. NH or NE Mass

Okay, so I'm missing living in the Conway area right about now :(. I'm taking 4 grad courses this summer, so I don't have a whole lot of time on my hands, and I'm spending part of the week in Cambridge and part of it in the Merrimack Valley. I found a great place to drop the boat in Boxford at...

    Is this a marten?

Absolutely American Marten. You caught the head and ears in a way that pretty much rules anything else out. The head is actually not very different from that of a fisher, but fisher color and size are so different that I think your pic nails the little guy. Nice shot!
