27 Trekkers Dead From Unexpected Blizzard on Annapurna Circuit

A massive blizzard hit along the Annapurna route with avalanches and missing trekkers. What a mess! What a horrendous experience being on the Thorong pass when the storm hit. The safest thing to do was hunker down in the tea house and wait it out --- most of the group that tried to make a trek...

Rescue story in The Berlin Sun

Kudos to all the responders who braved wet conditions and high winds to reach her. It appears the original assessment of her condition was incorrect because she eventually was able to hike out on her own. It's unfortunate an unnecessary amount of people was put at risk. That said, assessing...

    Sad Day on Jefferson

CPR for 2 1/2 hours! That is highly commendable when you think they were not getting a pulse over that time. Last year in the Dolomites someone seized up in front of me and I went into CPR mode. Not having done it in a while, it was better to do something than nothing at all. Among the dozen...

To Whom Do You Recommend Trail Safety Improvements?

I complete a trail conditions report after performing trail maintenance and mail it to the USFS Pemigewasset District so I'll take a look next time and inform the Forest Service. The Forest Service will be working on improving the Tripoli Road side this fall. I found the Greeley Ponds approach...

What would your meal plan look like for 2 night backpack trip

You might be saving fuel with commercial freeze-dried meals...but not money. A Lipton pasta package is 1/2 the price if not more, than freeze dried meals...and they taste much better. Plus, cooking gives me something to do when I get to camp. I use coffee filters to wipe down the cookware...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Most people seem to time their hikes to have lunch on the summit around noon so I've been working around that. I time arriving at the summit either for 11AM for an early lunch or 2PM for a late lunch. On loop trails, I make sure I follow the direction most people use so I don't run into the herd...

We actually were able to get one of our adopted peaks: Osceola! And guess what? We'll be doing trail maintenance between Mt. Osceola and East Peak for those two hours. Looking forward to it!

    Favorite WMNF Campground

A friend of mine asked me for a recommendation as to which one to stay at for a few days and not having been to many, I decided to search this forum and found this topic has not been discussed before. I'm limited to ten selections so I chose those that I've heard of.

    Adirondack Newbie

There's already been some good suggestions here. I'll be heading to the Dacks in September to help a friend finish his 46ers. One of the backpacking excursions will be going over Wright, Algonguin, Iroquois with an overnight stay in one of the shelters around Lake Colden. The next day we will...

A bunch of rescues last weekend

I completely agree. If I see a folks that look unprepared or starting quite late on a hike, I just let it go. You learn from experience, mistakes and common sense. If someone asks a question, I gladly assist and take out my map. And as you said, a simple question like 'do you have a flashlight'...
