No doubt. Sorry about the person you knew.

report of a hiker killed by a black bear in NJ

Raven, I like you. I would certainly hike with you. But I disagree with you. Let's forget about 300 years ago. There are more bear in NJ now (vs. "none" 75 years ago) because habitat has improved (grass, gardens, trees, ponds, garbage cans, woodlands, open spaces, limited hunting, etc.)...

report of a hiker killed by a black bear in NJ

I think there are species and areas where that's the case, like cougar in California or Woodcock here. I don't believe it's a valid argument in most of the northeast with bear, cougar, eastern coyote and deer as these were virtually extirpated (or non-existent) 100 years ago. I believe a lack...

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

We have never gone back to the cute Diner, across from the library, in Littleton. Maybe we need an "Avoid" list also.

Baiting is an allowed hunting method where populations need to be reduced. That area of New Jersey has had too many bear for a long time.

    4 Season Tent Help

I participated with my Sierra Designs tent, which did very well, but is not for above treeline. There were many Eureka! tents on Rainier in 2008. I have preferred free standing, double wall tents. I don't like the idea of a tent that is not freestanding as it is critical and may be difficult...

report of a hiker killed by a black bear in NJ

http://www.newstimes.com/news/science/article/Hiker-s-body-found-in-New-Jersey-nature-preserve-5771460.php I'm sure many more hikers are harmed by allergies and car accidents, so I'm not saying Black Bear are dangerous. But this can happen, obviously. My only analysis is that they probably...

That's reopened as something different now. Since the fire or water or whatever happened there. A little too upscale for me the last time.

I don't mean to make light of the OP, this just looked like a good opportunity to share a couple recent pics from Streeter Pond, Sugar Hill.

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

I just noticed that the original one was started 5 years ago (Thanks TwinMom+1 !). I was going to go through the responses, make a list and make a survey, but enough has changed where that probably doesn't make sense. Also, I'd like a survey of best "Immediately After Hiking" dining and getting...

any problems with a yard Woodchuck?

Yeah, the dog is 30lb and the woodchuck is at least that. This woodchuck has a great spot carved out up under the back of the deck into the yard slope. I've had dogs I would "send in", this puppy isn't one of them. I don't really mind 1, but I don't want more.
