50 Most Prominent. 100 Most Prominent? 200 Most Prominent??

I had a similar thought while standing on Mt Hight last weekend. It's one of my favorite places in the whites and deserves more prestige than 'the bump next to Carter Dome'.. Hight is high on my list of finest peaks.

    VT 4000 footers

I used the 'Hikers Guide to the Mountains of Vermont' by Jared Gange when completing the VT4K. It's very basic compared to the AMC guide however provides accurate trail descriptions, mileage and trailhead directions.

    North and South Kinsman

You will get a good idea of your companions capabilities on the hike to lonesome lake. I've hiked it from Franconia several years ago and if I remember correctly, the trail starts off pretty aggressively then levels off. The hut is a nice waiting spot should someone not want to continue and...

    North and South Kinsman

Hi Hardyb I hiked Kinsman from the West (rt 116) last Saturday (3/4) and the trail to the summit ridge was on packed snow with solid footing. The Ridge to North Kinsman was more difficult due to the occasional snow drift. The col over to South Kinsman was a nightmare. Knee deep to waist deep...

    AMC Awards for dogs

Bruno, I appreciate the feedback and just because your opinion differs from mine it dosen't mean it's wrong. :) You (and Dr Wu) must be cat lovers. :) **notice the smily faces** I'm just curious at to if other hikers with dogs had the same thoughts as me..

    Hiking with your K9

Dogs can get Giardia the same way humans can. I've attempted to keep my lab out of streams and had no luck. I've learned to keep a close eye on him (and stool) for a few days after a hike. I have noticed that my dog will occasionally pass up a stream that looks perfectly fine to me and I...

    AMC Awards for dogs

I agree that the dog (and some people) could care less about the patch & scroll.. They aren't the purpose of my hiking but a reward.. I'm proud of my dog for his accomplishment. He just got an A+ and I'd like to put his award on the fridge!!

    AMC Awards for dogs

Hey Maddy I am planning on contacting the AMC via a kind written letter but wanted to get feedback on the idea from other hikers with dogs. What better place than VFTT!!

    AMC Awards for dogs

The AMC gives a 48 patch & scroll to any dog completing the "list". I understand that the AMC will not award a dog a 67 or 100 patch & scroll due to the fact that dogs are not allowed in Baxter State park. Anyway, why not award a dog a 48, 64, and 94 patch & scroll for completing all the hikes...

    compass vs gps

I carry both the Map & Compass along with a GPS. The GPS is a great tool but I'm unable to put my faith in 2 things, 1 - Batteries and 2 reception. I found it's tough to get good reception in a low lying valley on a cloudy day and end up wasting a set of batteries while trying to pick up a...

    Hiking with your K9

Start off with a slow paced, short, easy hike and see how your pup does. When I hike with my black lab I keep a pretty close eye on him and make sure he drinks when I drink and check his paws for cuts & scrapes whenever I rest. I also carry food and feed him when I have a snack or sandwich. I...

    FTFC's "Lone Canine"

How do dogs write an essay on their final ascent? Personally, I don't think dogs should be given this award because some careless owners will drag a dog (and I've heard stories of careless parents dragging their kids) along just for a sheet of paper, a shoulder patch, and to brag to their...

Opinion on what made these scratches?

Definately Moose While climbing No. Brother in early October I saw dozens of trees with similar markings. Only hardwood trees had the markings all the conifers were "clean". I left the trail to get a closer look at the trees and startled a rather large female moose who was getting a early...

    BD Zenix IQ

I've got the Zenix IQ and love it. I've been doing some evening trail running just for a reason to use it.. I didn't notice the discrepancy in weights between packaging & users guide and doubt that I still have the packaging but will look.. Is it possible that the higher weight includes...

    Survival stories New TV show

I saw a preview for a new show on Discovery called "I shouldn't be alive". A Quote from the discovery site The premise sounds intriguing and similar to "touching the Void" or "survive" (Peter Deleo) and could offer some assisance to lost hikers.
