    Ladders on Everest

There's a ladder already on the North Col route, correct? Second step? Granted, that Second Step sounds like a tougher climb than Hillary. And the Chinese make the decisions over there.

    Sunday storm ... power outages

I was canoeing the Pemi down to the Rt 49 crossing yesterday. Got the canoe out, flipped it over, and hid in the car 'til the brunt of it passed. Not a minute to spare. Phew! Approaching the bridge, we were paddling our hearts out TOWARDS the black wall of clouds, pretty unnerving. Strong storm.

    Slides On The Tripyramids

That sign is still there in the middle of nowhere as of last October. That explains it's location, my group was baffled as to it's purpose. Don't remember an obvious trail bed coming in at the sign, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. The ground was snow-covered at the time.

What are those mountains northeast of Acadia/MDI?

Look up "Donnell Pond Public Reserve Land" and "Tunk Mountain." Mainetrailfinder.com can get you started. No personal experience, but I hear there are some pretty scenic areas in those hills. A fraction of the Acadia crowds too.

And I thank you for that!

Huge group hike planned Franconia Ridge.

Yay! :-/ The group size limitation, while good practice for all areas IMO, is only "rule-of-the-land" (and hopefully enforced) in the official wilderness areas. Guess I'll have to keep that in mind and avoid this area on that day. You'd probably do better selling poutine! :)

When the roads will be open for...

The WMNF roads page received an update or two the last couple days. As of today, Rt.113 is indicated as OPEN. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/whitemountain/home/?cid=stelprdb5183538

the ice cave at the bottom of Tuckerman Ravine's snow pack

Silly hiking up to Tuckerman for a 5 second run? Perhaps. But, not as silly as you standing underneath that thing. Try to keep the odds in your favor, careful out there. "The mountains spare most fools."

    Spring Snow Cover Reports

Mt. Major, Straightback Mtn., and the knob north of SB are all snowfree in the Belknaps. Pretty dry considering the season, too.

    Moose family in Franconia Notch

For those interested, I found this site gives a good explanation of the ongoing cycles. http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Wildlife_Journal/WJ_sample_stories/WJ_e11_Ghostmoose.pdf

    Spring Snow Cover Reports

I hiked Bald Knob from the "upper parking area" in the Ossipees two days ago and it was snow-free. The bootleg trail from BK to Turtleback was also snow free. Turtleback Mtn Tr on the way up from BK had snow packed over the winter by snowmobiles.

Rediscovering the Old trails of the New Deal - NH, VT, MA

I had a great time skinning up and riding my splitboard down the Tucker Brook trail on Thursday. Fresh pow and a fun run. https://picasaweb.google.com/111342764983603187617/TuckerbrookSkiTrailShred22113?noredirect=1

I had the same experience on 1/18/13. Mostly off the pavement on the north side of the road.

    DSLR Camera Holder

My girlfriend and I met a woman and her husband on the side of Mt. Webster (Squam Range) a few weeks back using a Backcountry Solutions Keyhole. It looked like a cool system to keep your DSLR handy (she was using a Canon T1i.) She had nothing but good things to say about it, so take that as you...

WMNF from a West Coast Perspective

More questionable to me would be their decision to cross the Dry River valley to Iso and back from Mizpah after 3 straight days of rain, knowing the trails there were closed and heavily damaged. But they made it so hey, "HYOH!"
