When you're hiking at or even driving to/from Acadia, you inevitably look out at some beautiful, smallish mountains that are north and east of the island. Anyone know what that area is, and what's the best way to hike it if it is indeed hikeable?

Look up "Donnell Pond Public Reserve Land" and "Tunk Mountain."

Mainetrailfinder.com can get you started.

No personal experience, but I hear there are some pretty scenic areas in those hills. A fraction of the Acadia crowds too.

There is also side by side peaks of Schoodic and Black Mtn are prominent looking north from Acadian Peaks. All three are in the last Maine Mountain Guide.
