Types of snowshoe binding, quality, reliability

There are also different types of bindings but since MSR has such a big presence, the two probably get lost in the shuffle. Some bindings allow the snowshoe to rotate around the pivot axle freely, some are limited. The different is easily tested by lifting your foot and seeing if the tail of...

    Unplowed parking lots

I've shovelled out small parking spots for myself before in the catskills before... :D This doesn't answer though the original intent of your email. I suspect it might be $$ related but a squeeky wheel gets the grease, maybe you can ask the appropriate owner of the lot for one, it might answer...

Rt. 106 in Harriman State Park

Oops you're right, I'm thinking of Arden Valley Road... I think people XC ski down some of the roads in winter, like Lake Welsh on the other side of 7LD.. Jay

    Lyon Mtn 12/31/29013

Doesn't have to be shingles, I suspect they wont last long but you get the idea. Something that is durable in the cold and replaceable or at least easier than the wooden rungs... Maybe a metal mesh above the wood? Jay

    Lyon Mtn 12/31/29013

Maybe consider asphalt shingles or something rougher shingles nailed to the boards, this provides a level of protection that is replaceable and not metal (attracts ice)... Maybe something better than asphalt shingles (I'm not sure how tough asphalt shingles would be, ask a roofer) but something...

    Lyon Mtn 12/31/29013

Pointless U and Down == PUD! You're showing your NY-centricity :D :) The whole firetower was covered in rime ice, I wouldn't climb that firetower without microspikes, especially with the missing fencing on the landings... Jay

Date: new year's eve, 2013 From: Chazy Lake Road Route: out and back, up via the very well used "old" trail and down via most of the "new" trail. Rt. 106 in Harriman State Park

it's a road that was already deemed seasonal and generally fenced closed by the bridge over Rt 17 and also fenced close to 7LD... You drive over 106 when you're on the NYS Thruway and you can sometimes see people parked in the dirt lot as you go by on the thruway.. Jay

Favorite Off-the-Marked Trail Routes to Maximize the Fun of Beloved Hikes

I think I've pretty much followed your path at race brook falls, somebody died there this past summer, I presume from falling off the top of the falls, close to the AT but I never got the full details.... Jay

    Suggested day trip on-the-Hudson

Well, I told you not to balance that skillet on top of your head, coldfeet, ya know center of gravity and all that stuff? :D Adding weight so that you sit in the water lower also increases the waterline (albeit a tiny amount)... Jay

    Nylon vests

funny, I just wore a nylon vest this morning on my bike commute.. If you do chose a bike specific one, many of them will have reflective strips on them for visibility which I think would be good if you plan on running/walking along roads in the fall/spring when it gets dark early and bright...

    Suggested day trip on-the-Hudson

Haha, Hi David, we launched from Plum Point in Newburgh, paddled over some nice wind blown swells to just north of Bannerman's Castle to take the shortest route through the wind and then north to Denning Point where we camped and then met IndianChris the next day. I remember the hudson being...

Lodging near Mt Abe and Ellen in VT

http://greystonemotel.com/ I stayed there last winter after hiking Moosalamoo and befofe hiking Abe/Ellen. It's decent lodging, nothing fancy but most of the places right in Middlebury were too expensive for my needs. You will pretty much have to drive to get food, etc but the place was fine...
