How to become a trail maintainer ?

A lot of this depends on where you want to maintain... For the catskills which falls under NY, I maintain a trail through the Catskills 3500 club and ultimately through the NYNJTC. So the guidelines of how much trail and how often is determined by the TC. It happens to be twice a year for the...

    Continental Divide finishers

i ran into a few CDT hikers on my Great Divide MTB ride, in Wyoming's Great Basin, including one guy who prefered to call it the Continental Divide Route since he called it more of a route than an actual trail.. Jay

Hiking in the Taconics on Saturday

Brace and South Brace have excellent views of the northern Dutchess/Columbia counties... Sages Ravine is a nice place to in that area in as far as waterfalls/streams go. If you want a pretty steep and exposed trail, you can do South Brace from Quarry Road... I did a loop with a short road...

Any 2 Day Loop Hike Recommendations Western MA?

Greylock would be your best option for a loop, since it is the largest area and includes the AT that goes through it. The Taconic Crest Trail is a nice backpack too but it's mostly linear and not a lot of loops for a full 2 days... There are leantos on greylock and the Sperry Campground...

    Canoe Camping?

Maybe on your way back to Worcester, you can swing through southern VT and hit up the somerset reservoir... Free car camping nearby and friendly boats since they don't allow big speedy motorboats on the lake..... :) Jay

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Melting snow is multitudes slower than if you can find open water and filtering. Snow is full of air and you need a lot of it to get water for a day's use for a group of people. On rainier, we basically spent like 1/2 our rest day with about 6 stoves melting snow for about 12 of us. In this...

    Trangia Cookset Recommendations

So you have a mini trangia and looking to make a better windscreen for it? I agree that the windshield/pot stand that comes with the mini trangia is not ideal but consider making a windscreen and perhaps separating it from the pot stand for better wind protection. Making a larger windscreen to...

    Vermont map?

Just using a google search. the maps I used were basically USGS quads but had like markings of where the various trails and roads were. The trails and roads were somewhat "rearranged' by Hurrican Irene/Sandy but they were good enough to get me where I wanted to go. i.e the north and south peaks...

    Vermont map?

NatGeo has maps of the green mountains broken up into northern and southern sections. I think NatGeo used some outdated maps so I can't exactly say I am that pleased with them but they should be accurate enough to use for the HH stuff. Having said that, I have found a lot of good info on the...

    Car Camping Near Greylock

I've been to a few basic pizza places in north adams but also this place: http://www.publiceatanddrink.com/ It's casual and pretty good.. If you like tapas, you might be interested in going west on rt 2 and check out Espanas in Williamstown and if you go even further (Not really far though)...

    Car Camping Near Greylock

I think the AT hikers have priority so if it's high thru hikers season, then it might be harder. I think most of the nobos would have gone through the southern berkshires by now, but I don't really follow them. I occasionally see thru hiker looking folks in Lenox or Pittsfield in my travels...

    Car Camping Near Greylock

Nice place, definitely swimmable but it's definitely not car camping unless you have permission or know of some way to access the private homes along the south lake there... A lot of the DCR campgrounds do not have showers, mind you so if you want a shower, you might try a private campground...

    Car Camping Near Greylock

Clarksburg is close to the Upper and eastern trailheads.. It is popular with the folks starting the Long Trail/AT at the VT/MA border just because of it's location. I've camped at the Historic valley campground when Clarksburg was full. If you get the walkin sites, they are generally quiet...
