Alright, who has a messy trunk?

You must have a Webshots account. I noticed the same thing when I checked - a picture that I took that is stored on Webshots. I can only imagine what Cory sees when he gets a look at that ad - a jewelry box with a picture of a trunk-load of crap on it! Cory - are you really using those old...

Burnt Mtn (3,609') via Burnt Mtn trail and Sugarloaf

Started near the chapel at Sugarloaf Ski area parking lot, walked east over to the condos at Bigelow Mtn Road. At the far end of this road are signs leading 50 yards along an XC ski trail over a brook to the blue-blazed trail leading to the right up Burnt Mtn. Trail is in good shape, no...

    Trailhead waypoint file?

Now people need GPS just to find the trailheads?! What is this world coming to?

    New Hampshire photo quiz

Looks like you indeed found the true summit of E. Hitchcock, with the characteristic canister hanging on a branch like an XMas ornament. There is a second jar up there somewhere, presumably on a false summit, but only MarcHowes and Barbarossa have been able to find it in recent years... Oh...

    GPS controversy explained.

I feel like I should chime in, since I'm apparently one of the most "critical" of those that rely on GPS technology. Personally, I don't care what method other people use. I think everyone that goes hiking should at least have some fundamental map and compass skills to rely on if anything...

    New Hampshire photo quiz

#2 is the "campsite" on the Old Osseo trail that comes from the Clearbrook Condos, just before the last real brook crossing.

    Bushwhacker commandments.

Thou shalt obey thine GPS for verily ye will never find thine summit nor thine car without such a gift from the benevolent gods. All those who dost not follow this rule are sacrilegious heathens! Famine and pestilence shalt rain down upon thee!! ;)

Bear goes moose hunting on Cedar Brook trail

It sounds to me like they were just playing a friendly game of tag.

    Worcester Mt (North Pk)

Heaven forbid someone calls into question Gene Daniell's nomenclature! The confusing point about this naming convention is that you left out a letter in transcribing the name. The peak in question is "Worcester MtS North Peak". You see, White Rock Mtn, Mount Hunger, "North Hunger", Mount...

    Deer (ME) 10/18

Hmm... I was up there about a month ago. I specifically remember what I wrote in the PVC register by the tower footings and metal "quadropod", too. Maybe I signed the back of a page to conserve space. (Just like the jar on Big Jackson that you didn't see my name in...)

    Mt. Guyot

The col depth is theoretically the same on the South Twin AND the Bondcliff sides. The best case scenario in terms of prominence (the technical term for this is "optimistic prominence") is 4600-4360=240', and the worst case scenario is 4561-4399=162'. The odds are it falls somewhere in between...

    Vt info: Rice-Adams, Corporation-Round, N/S Blue Ridges?

In my experience, there really isn't any advice needed on these peaks. Pick a road that comes close to the base of the peak and just start "whalking". Vermont is bushwhackers' paradise... if you come to anything that remotely resembles "thick" then you're doing something terribly wrong. Feel...

Louise and Pisgah (Coburn Gore) advice?

There's a well-defined logging road that is shown on the topo map (and satellite images) that gets to within a mile of the summit of Pisgah. It follows the west branch of Clearwater Brook up to 2,100'. I'm not sure if that road will be gated, but that's how I plan on approaching it.

    Lyon Mt (NW Pk)

That's interesting. I never knew that Gene Daniell compiled the original Adirondack 3K list. Cool. We can call mountains like NW Lyon whatever we want, since technically they are unnamed with the USGS. Just because one version of an unofficial list has it named one way doesn't mean we all have...

    Lyon Mt (NW Pk)

Ah, yes - you're right. Upon further inspection, the 3,013' peak doesn't have nearly enough of a col. Personally, I think it is kind of lame (and quite misleading) that this peak is called NW Lyon, given its position relative to Averill. That would be like calling Gray Peak "Northwest...

    Lyon Mt (NW Pk)

Is this the NW Lyon summit or the NW Averill summit? I did NW Averill on the first day of spring this year and it looked strikingly similar - almost completely open with basically 360 degree views. Your description sounds just like what I encountered with the open woods and the ATV trail. I...

Best approach to Scar Ridge East

I recall doing "Scar Ridge East" about 2 years ago in late fall. After the height of land on the East Pond trail, it was about as thick as I've ever seen it for a good ways up. There was a group of 5 of us, and it was quite amusing being all dispersed through a thick, sprucy section. You would...

Faraway Mtn May Be Closer Than You Think

The evidence you have introduced looks pretty convincing to me, Roy. I like the Scudder's Guide, but I wouldn't classify him as an authority on the subject. Also, since when does an AMC guidebook count as being more authoritative than a USGS quad map? The guidebook is simply a tool to help...

    Green Peak (mt Aeolus)

Summit canisters aren't really a point of contention at all. Personally, I feel that they paint bushwhackers as canister-obsessed oddballs, which may be true but it isn't completely accurate. I have been to summits that have two, three, or even five glass or plastic jars and yards of flagging...
