5 Days in Baxter State Park

very nice report. it makes me want to befriend bob and geri (they seem so nice) and hike remote peaks with them. and be a contented passenger in the monster suburban with xm radio. :D felt like i was there. can't wait to explore BSP.

Carragain and East Burke for the 4th

for the record... steve smith & mike dickerman have a section in their 4,000 footer book regarding how many peaks can be seen from each summit. these two guys assert that 43 can be seen from carrigain. these guys are not of course infallible, but they do have a pretty good track record.

    Arsonists target Dillon in Success

actually dave, i'll disagree at the likely peril of attracting more red squares (bring 'em on if that's your inclination)... after reviewing the facts that are known thus far, it is my contention that the following words would be far more appropriate than the word terrorist: vandal arsonist...

North Twin July 3rd - More than I expected

hikerbob is always climbing the same mountains i am on nearly the same days. nowadays i just take this for granted and keep an eye out for him while on the trail (i know what he looks like from his copious and excellent photos).

    Arsonists target Dillon in Success

The word terrorist has got to be one of the most overly used, and worse, inappropriately used, words in modern day American English.

    Blitz report

i'm pretty in shape (i like at least 15 mile hikes w/ good elevation) and i have to admit that the hancocks kicked my booty last week. i don't know if it was blood loss from the black flies or what, but they were harder than i expected.

    JETBOIL:Are they really that good?

i've gotta say i like my jetboil. it really is FAST, and i've made a friend or two much more comfortable very quickly when they've gotten very cold.

thanks very much for the replies thus far. your offerings have given me good leads that i am in the process of investigating.

Did anyone else donate at least 1/5 of their blood to black flies this weekend?

i should have worn pants. i shave my legs (i'm a cyclist) so they got to me easily. i almost put on my gaiters strictly for bug protection purposes, but it was just warm enough to make it seem uncomfortable.

Help: A Good Hike in the Poconos

I'm headed to the Poconos in about a month's time for a few days with the in-laws. If I don't get outside for a dedcent hike and some exercise, I am sure I will implode. Can anyone recommend a decent hike in the Poconos area? I'm normally into strenuous "pushing limits"-type hikes, but here I'm...

I hear you. My friend almost took a couple of good falls because she said that running from the bugs clouded her decisions when descending.

    Unknown Pond backpack

i'm planning a kilkenny ridge traverse, and i'm likely to stay at unknown pond. anything one should know about it? the mini-bicycles are a constant in my pack. the ideal is to have four people for some spades before crashing out.

Did anyone else donate at least 1/5 of their blood to black flies this weekend?

I climbed the Hancocks this weekend and was devoured. It was unreal. The worst was that the summits seemed to be the most ferocious haunts for those little !@#$s. I took cursing to a whole new level in search of phrases that would let those little insects know how I really felt about them. Bug...
