Lafayette Place and Old Bridle Path Parking Fees proposed

I disagree with the parking fees, and I suspect that many days the cost to collect the fees may exceed the actual revenue. I think the Lafayette Place parking lot should be expanded and illegal parking should be ticketed/towed as necessary. I also think the state should finally start using the...

    Funds For Franconia Ridge

A lot of this work can be done without big tools. One of the most talented individual volunteers in the WMNF was chased out by red tape awhile ago. Truly high-quality work done without come-alongs, high-lines, etc. Just smart engineering, hard work, and devotion. The Albany Mountain Trail is...

    Funds For Franconia Ridge

I don't think this is a good use of taxpayer dollars. I am also concerned that a significant portion of the funding will be absorbed by administrative/environmental surveying/etc. costs. One of the best things that could be done for our trails would be to remove the red tape that hinders...

Saddleback Uphill Trail - Does not go to the summit

Apart from the uphill route, I don't believe the owners have cut any new trails.

    MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoes

I stopped using the Lighting Ascents in part due to the weak crampons (went to Tubbs Flex Alps and haven't looked back), but I was able to use the crampons from the corresponding MSR plastic snowshoes of the time (Evo I think), as they were the same size.

No More Parking at Lowes Store

Lowes was plowed and hikers were parking there when I drove by Friday morning.

Mt Washington Study Confirms Climate Shift at Summit and Pinkham

What are they using for the baseline data? The write up cites data going back to 1932, but the chart shows 1935. New England had some really weird winters in the 1930s.

    "Old School" Winter 4K Routes

I don't know that to be the case. There have been many mild winters, late starts, early finishes, early starts, late finishes, etc. over the years. Based upon historic accounts, it was not uncommon to have New Hampshire ski areas operating on small snowmaking slopes early season due to lack of...

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

Saw that in the news today (link). They officially close in three weeks. After years of driving by, we finally stopped in there a few years ago. Nice facility, good food, good prices, good service. Since then, when we're in the area, we make a point of going there (I like it better than Mr...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

That source does not fully support your claim. By the way, the history teacher I alluded to in the post (that I concluded with a wink) was a Massachusetts full-blooded Native American.

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

I recollect from pre-colonial history class that the Native Americans in present-day New England used to purposefully burn large swaths of land on a regular basis. What a blatant disregard of their carbon footprint! ;)

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

In fairness, those "current" graphs are real-time on a cloudy day; over the course of a full year, it will look a little different (and it could also look a lot different on a cold winter night). Last I knew, the fuel mix does not include behind-the-meter generation (e.g. net metered solar)...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

Since that publication, Schiller has been reportedly shut down, leaving Merrimack (Bow) as the last coal plant (I believe both Rumford and Westbrook are biomass enabled now, retaining coal capabilities). Natural gas has filled that void, but prices are skyrocketing.

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

That's all that's left. All other nuclear plants in New England have been decommissioned. Millstone 1, Connecticut Yankee, Yankee Rowe, Yankee Vermont, Yankee Maine, and Pilgrim have all be shut down. Only one coal plant remains. Natural gas is now the predominant source of electricity in...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

An issue with electricity, as well as COVID and CO2, is that since you can't actually see it, it makes it easier for those with agendas to detrimentally fill in the blanks when pushing policy. Many don't understand the basics of electric generation, transmission, and consumption. Solar and...
