Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Isn't Greeley Ponds trail closed? Also, there's a slide that I've heard can be dangerous on E. Osceola. I haven't approached from that side but maybe it might not be best to involve a side-hilling rock slide in a first snowshoe trip.

    Wind Stopping Base Layer Advice

I am also among the "high moisture" group (seriously I sweat if my heart rate goes up at all). Conditions have no effect. Usually I have to bring extra gear just to swap out the wet stuff with the dry stuff. I definitely appreciate the suggestion to try a wind layer between the wicking and...

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Did anyone say Mt. Major in Alton, NH? Three miles RT with about 900 in ele gain. The views are stunning. The main trail will almost always be broken out and the trail is wide and easy to follow. It's less popular in winter, not super crowded but I've only gone once and not seen a single person...

NYT: Developers of Wind Farms Run a Race Against the Calendar

I questioned the motives of Iberdrola on facebook months ago when that wind farm in Groton first appeared. In the recent discussion we had on wind farms, lots of people seemed to notice the urgency with which these big energy companies are trying to set up shop all over the state. Here's your...

I love these threads! Keep posting pictures! Franconia Ridge, New Year's Day The (poor) quality of this picture was my inspiration for getting a new camera. Dawn over Wolfeboro First time out with the new camera (Canon T3 with the standard 18-55 IS lens if anyone was interested). It was a...

Energy Drinks - Risks and Rewards

My friends and I have an inside joke that I can fall asleep anywhere. Standing up, driving, literally anywhere if I am tired enough. If the temperature is over 76 in the house I will fall asleep sitting down (at the computer, etc...). So you can count this life as "probably saved by an energy...

    Crampons for Non Rigid Boots

I didn't pay that much if I recall correctly, they were like 30% off but it was a Black Friday sale. :D I wouldn't be surprised if EMS does a similar sale this year...

    Crampons for Non Rigid Boots

I have a pair of Petzl Vasak's with their "Flexlock" binding that have served me well in combination with my North Face Slot series boots. They do have a small lip on the heel which holds the rubber of the binding nicely. It works . They are a bit more aggressive than the KTS Steel that is...

    General Trail Building Question

I disagree. The stones will not only encourage the hiker to stay on the trail, but will also drain water at the same time. Not only that, it may not be visible in the image, but the entire trail has been rebuilt on a raised bed, probably 2-3 feet above the surrounding terrain, built on different...

    General Trail Building Question

Trail reconstruction for OBP that I was talking about earlier for anyone looking for an example of great trailbuilding: http://amc-nh.org/committee/trailcrew/trailwork/index.php?fd=20120808%20Old%20Bridle%20Path/ (Old trail is completely washed out on the left, new trail is elevated on the...

    General Trail Building Question

Not at all really. In my experience, the method differs quite a bit depending on the location and resources available (and laws). But most of the time the trail should be even or slightly raised above the surrounding terrain to shed water away. Trenches become streams in a rainstorm. I can't...

    Shoe Repair

When I worked at Ace they were happy to special order something. It would come in on the regular order so you would just have to wait until they got it in. Things may work different at other hardware stores but this was 8 years ago or so in Lee/Newmarket/Durham when they were Ace (and before...
