Acadia Memorial Weekend Bash - 5-25 to 5-28-12

Nice TR! Great pictures. We took our family to Acadia for the first time ever in April. I enjoyed the hiking a lot! As tomcat mentioned, I think this place is overlooked quite a bit due to the lack of lists/high peaks. We'll definitely be going back many times. We missed Anemone Cave but from...

    Tomorrow above 4 thous. feet?

It's a perfect day for trail maintenance on National Trails day! How else would you know where the water erodes the trail? ;)

Kilimanjaro training in the Whites - foul weather alternatives??

Valley Way trail fits your requirements, but I can't recommend it to anyone. It's an awful mess. Take Brookside to Lower Bruin and finish on VW. Far better hike. I suppose that begs the question: Does the trail need to summit? Gale River trail to Frost to South Twin really is only exposed for...

    NH Outdoors Quiz Grouseking Style

    1) I've never been there, but it looks in the area of Passaconaway? From Whiteface, Mt Paugus is directly in front of Chocorua iirc.

Don't climb every mountain - This year's climbing season on Everest and hazards

Wowwww I think this picture says it all: And I thought Franconia Ridge was crowded in the summer. :D

Hammer Time (Favorite short, steep trail sections)

After hiking the Mount Major trail in 90 degree heat yesterday, I was reminded once again why the top half of the trail has little to no vegetation on it. :) It climbs about 900 ft in 3/4 of a mile, if you stop to turn around once in awhile, though, the views more than make up for the pain. ;)

Another North Country Prison in Lancaster?

Google search yielded this: http://ncia.net/wireless/ $699 for 1.5 MBPS... I would say the price is not right. I have no idea who this company is or if they are reputable so please don't consider this a recommendation! Options seem to be very limited up beyond the notches. edit: I also...

    2012 Spring Wildflower Thread

Another bouquet from the girls. This time they found them in a field behind the local rec center. I'm not great with identifying flowers but I think I got this one. :o Pheasant's Eye Narcissus (Narcissus poeticus) (also a buttercup thrown in there for good measure) And yes... we still are...

Another "Donation" to the S&R Fund ? - Mt Madison Rescue

As I mentioned earlier in the thread. Last July I hiked the upper portion (between Watson and the hut) and it was overgrown. Not sure if anything has changed since then or any maintenance has been done (or the condition of the lower parts of the trail), but I could see someone getting lost...

Another "Donation" to the S&R Fund ? - Mt Madison Rescue

I don't know if anyone has been on Pine Link since last summer, but when I was there in July it was overgrown. I suspect someone could easily get off trail there.

    Morgan/Percival 4/21/12

This really is a great loop with a ton of fun things to do. As you noted, there's quite a bit of solitude on these peaks, I've noticed in my experience as well. I totally understand what you mean about "freaking yourself out" while solo hiking. Great TR! :)

Mountain Rescue Service speaks up about State billing

I'm pretty sure Mrs. Horgan posts here, I wonder if she'll respond. I find the situation ridiculous. The article is right, how much money does the state of NH spend on encouraging people to come climb these mountains, then charge them the full cost of a rescue on the way out if someone makes a...

The largest collection of lean-to pictures ever (probably) (image heavy)

I was scrolling through and got to page 2 and I thought "Wow! This is a lot of lean-to's." Then I realized I wasn't even close to halfway through yet. Really nice job! :D

Here They Go Again - National Parks Threatened by HR 1505

Well, I'm glad I'm going to Acadia next week before they destroy the place. I'll also be leaving this somewhat related link here: http://www.amazon.com/Before-Theyre-Gone-Year-Long-Endangered/dp/0807001198/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332247599&sr=8-1

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

That's too bad, the Ossipees have many redeeming qualities. You should visit, they're lovely! (The Mt. Faraway Lookout is up there with the best views in the state in my opinion) As for the issue at hand. The documents linked say the land must be made available for public use. Guaranteeing...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

Ah, but see, this takes away rights from land designated as public use. It's not quite as cut and dry as you make it. The bill even states that. Like you said, straightforward. Not specifically private, but private-but-designated-for-public-use. Why would they bother? Can anyone answer me the...
