Trail Food - What do you bring?

minnestrone soup I like to bring a quart of minnestrone made with home made chicken stock and loaded with starches-carrots, potatos, beans, corn, winter squash. A cup of grated Parmigiano Reggiano adds some protein to the soup. Add some ww bread and I'm a happy hiker, and I never forget mounds...

    Katahdin via Northwest Basin

north peaks trail I was talking to a ranger ( Brendan) and he told me after the ice srorm of 98 ?that the trail had a lot of blow downs and they never cleared them. There is a lot of work to keep a trail open and it's the moose that keep the interior trails open. I did the Russel pond-Davis...

    Huntington Ravine Trail Question:

lots of fun Most of the steep parts are only 8 to 10 feet long, except above the fan, which is about 25 foot slab of slick rock.If you have sticky soles you can walk right up. This is my second favorite trail and going through the alpine garden ( I don't go to the top, uses up too much of my...

    Best boots for steep slides?

salomon aqua tech The aqua tech also has contragrip soles, and they stick great. Going down steep slopes I curl my toes so they don't get demolished ( keeping the nails clipped helps ). grog

    Grivel Crampon repair?

fix for adjuster I wear flexible shoes in winter and about 4 years ago I broke the adjuster 4 times, right where it says " made in Italy ". I bought a pair of adjusters for ten dollars, but was really disapointed  with the g-10s. Then ranger Andrew ( monadnock) found out that if you put...

    Favorite Peaks/Hikes

best seat in house also add the Howes great spot to view the entire BSP. Mike, Howes through me off a bit, but that seat on the last peak I think is the best seat in Baxter. Too bad that trail is closed, it made a great loop.

    Twist and shout

strong ankles through sneakers When I hurt my ankle a few years ago, after two weeks I went to the doctor and he told me to keep moving. It took 3 months before I could hike up Monadnock. I decided instead of getting stiff, ankle supporting boots I would get low super flexable sneakers. My...

    safety equipment (I fell..ouch)

second worst time Pete, it was first thing in the morning. We just packed and were headed out when it happened, I wasn't warmed up. That is a good point about focusing. When I'm doing the steep stuff I really cncentrate on every move. Its even more fun when I get an anxiety attack, not only...

    safety equipment (I fell..ouch)

Sherpa, isn't that where the logging museum is ? I had an interesting encounter with a wild animal there. It was a fat, old chipmunk. His fur was half grey and when he looked at me his face was all white. When he sauntered away from me he was actually limping (reminded me of that old cowboy in...

    Favorite Peaks/Hikes

Northwest basin trail starting from Russell pond, sleep at Davis pond shelter, then out and over Hamlin peak trail. Huntington Ravine trail is my default trail in the whites, but I do not go to the top of the rock pile ( that last mile destroys me ! :o ).

    which mountain most often?

Mud boots, fair weather boots, snow boots - those I understand. Should I even ask what "meet the girls" boots are???? You'll have to ask him. He's got names for all his boots. When you think of all the miles he hiked ( pretty tough miles on the dot ), in all the weather he's hiked in ( winds so...

    which mountain most often?

I haven't climbed the larger mountains in NE much, but one thing I learned was in order to enjoy them I had to get in better physical shape. The best way to get in shape for mountain climbing is to hike mountains. So about 6 years ago I started climbing Mt. Monadnock about once a week year...
