I need to get the straps replaced on both of my 10 pt. grivel crampons. I was wondering if anyone knows who does this sort of work. I live in New York City but could always post them. The main thing is that i want them repaired quickly so I don't miss too much of the winter hiking season. Thanks, Fred

You could probably call Grivel and ask, they have a North American office now out of Utah.

I recently ordered my g10's through them because I wanted to order the extender bar for them. They gave me 2 day shipping, and they were cool guys to talk to too.

Hey Fred, spoke to you on Sunday, thought I'd mention it here. I ordered a new strap for my CM 6 pters before and they sent me one for like $3 or so. It did come with a rivet that used a rivet gun, but I found out that with some patience and a little skill, I did it myself. I predrilled the strap with a very small bit and then used a combo of pliers and a small hammer to get the rivet closed around the metal ring. You might also have luck going to Campmor or perhaps a place in NYC that does it, Tent&trails?, EMS?, Campmor might be able to do it on the spot. I tried a sewing store and the lady there said they don't have a strong enough rivet gun to do thatm (either that or they didn't understand what I needed the rivet for on my crampon :D)

Grivel is actually distributed by a company in Vermont. I had an adjuster bar break on my G-10's when they were 3 mos. old. REI was going to send them to be repaired, but at my request, they sent new adjuster bars and I fixed them. Contact an REI store for the dist. info,or maybe they can send them for you.

Quite possible that they are distributed by somebody else as when you call them its like press 1 for chris the dude, 2 for mark the man, 3 for marketing questions or just whatever. They were super cool guys to talk to, kinda felt like since their voicemail picked up they were probably out climbing... kinda company i enjoy calling anyways...

What kind of boot did you use that broke the adjuster bars? I was told that flexible hikers or trail runners would bust the steel adjuster bars which is why they came out with the flexible adjuster bars this year.

Kevin, right you are! I didn't know about the change.

Shayne,I was wearing Raichle Boots, plenty stiff enough for the G-10's. I think it was a metal defect in the bar. Coming off Passaconaway,on a fairly easy grade,I stepped right out of the crampon, tripped and did a header into a dead pine tree, impaling my calf with a small branch.OUCH!
The guy at REI was amazed that it broke, said he had only seen it once before. Anyone else ever had this happen? They have been fine since the repair, using the same boots till last year.

fix for adjuster

I wear flexible shoes in winter and about 4 years ago I broke the adjuster 4 times, right where it says " made in Italy ". I bought a pair of adjusters for ten dollars, but was really disapointed  with the g-10s. Then ranger Andrew ( monadnock) found out that if you put the adjuster through one metal loop instead of two it flexed perfectly on the ball of the foot. I haven't broke one since, and I weigh 240 lbs. and wear sneakers now so I've really tested them. The 1 drawback is that you can't fold them neatly.

G10 adjustment bar break? Yes, on the ledges going up Whiteface (NH).
Field repaired temporarily til we went to EMS in Conway where they replaced the bar and showed us how to make them flexible. At the time they also sold replacement bars. I have two spare bars now but have yet to need them.

Grivel now sells the flexible adjuster bars separately for $10. Super flexy... i got a pair with the flexible bars, and I bought the extended rigid bars for my size 13's.
