    2009 Year in Preview...

I second so many of those goals, Dave! Skiing in Japan will be amazing. Losing weight is always high on my list year after year. However among the many improvements I want to make, I think the key will be improving self discipline and identifying the right motivation for any goal. Hopefully...

Large slow steps, or small fast steps?

This is a good question to consider. My default mode of ambulation is a long stride at a fast pace, be it street or singletrack. Even on rocky rooty trails I tend to stay with the long stride. As the grade steepens I will still keep strides long and am almost lunging, what I think of as...

    BC info?

You will have a lot of fun BC skiing, Sandy. I started skiing last winter, starting immediately with an Alpine Touring (AT) setup, since the goal was to ski primarily in the back country. I have Fritschi's Freeride Plus bindings, with brakes, on Black Diamond's Mystic skis (on sale for a...

Hikers find dead body in Harriman State Park

That is very sad. When I read the news my first thought was of the many hikers I know and whether it could be one of them. The thought that this poor man might have live and died there alone is even more poignant. I have never liked that area of the S-BM because it is so close to the Thruway -...

Nice or Necessary for winter hiking

Yes, idiot straps is the term I have heard used about them. For some reason very few of my gloves came with them so had to make my own. At least I know they are idiotproof. And on the 'warm hands' topic, yes hand and foot warmers are essential on the winter packing list. I resort to them as a...

Nice or Necessary for winter hiking

This is a great thread! Everyone has varied tricks and tips that are extra useful in winter. I have added straps to my bigger outer mitts and gloves, with a large loop around my wrist so when I need to take them off briefly I can shrug them off, they dangle from my wrists and do not blow away in...

    Bears in Whites

While doing the Tripyramids in early March a few years ago I saw bear tracks ALL day, so much that I thought it was inevitable I'd run into it. Never met the bear in person though, despite having an epic day that resulted in getting back to the car at 11pm. I did see two moose though, that was...

    Colden Trap Dyke – 9/07/08

Thanks for the great report and photos - you guys had such a lovely day for it. The Trap Dike is on my to-do list too, for summer and winter. I would want to be confident in my footwear too before heading onto those slabs.

For Those Who are Anxious for Winter

That will be my mantra this winter then! (along with 'keep facing the fall line' and 'knees BENT darnit!') This will be my second season skiing so I am keen to to improve a lot. Lots of weekends exploring the Daks are planned. And of course, one cannot omit the Whites :)

For Those Who are Anxious for Winter

The whole video has a nice mellow yet elegant feel to it - not steep nor full of gnar, just skillful gliding between the trees. Although those trees look a little too close together for my skill level, even with my heels securely fixed :D

NH48 Diretissima North to South 9/19-9/28

What a wonderful plan! Have a great time and hope you reach your goal. I admire your style, doing it as a backpack and as self-sufficient as possible. Looking forward to reading about it.

He skis so well despite his broken bindings ;) Nice video. I am so looking forward to another season exploring the BC!

    Hiking in the rain?

You should go for it! I love hiking in the rain and have yet to have a really horrible time doing it, apart from feeling temporarily cold and clammy on occasion. I rarely bother with Goretex outside of winter - I sweat and end up just as wet as if I was not wearing it (and at least in the rain I...

    Considering trying poles next time...

I have had numbness in toes on two occasions, once after a very tough 2-day backpack (I never use poles) and once after a 100K trail race. It is disconcerting but the feeling eventually comes back (within 2 weeks) so I just put it down to nerve damage from heavy weight/long hours pounding on...

    My brush with death

I am so relieved to hear you made it out of the woods and got medical care. That was a very gripping TR!

    Great Range Water Source Question

This may not help for your proposed route but worth considering. In August 2006 I did a version of the GRT with 2 friends. We started at JBL and starting with Marcy, went up and tagged Skylight, dropped down to Panther Gorge and refilled with water there, then headed up to Haystack, then Little...

Team Dom attempts Denali May 21 - June 10th

Have a wonderful trip, you guys! You sound like a well-coordinated and practised team. I did the West Butt route a few years ago with 2 friends, self-supported. I soooo want to go back. :D
