Mt. Kearsarge with the girls, May 1, 2010

Terrific! I love the RI highpoint post too with all its lawlessness. Funny we were on N. Kearsarge May 1st, and we bought Maxine a little Lafuma pack that she probably won't grow into for another two years!

    Phoenix AZ hiking -- Suggestions?

Sedona I second the drive to Sedona. You won't regret it. There are many, many "flavor of the west" hikes there that are not strenuous. I recall Vultee Arch, Devil's Bridge, Boyton Canyon- I think that one is a vortex, and West Fork. There was also one that brought you to the Seven Sacred Pools...

sad day for sardines: my first backpacking food

Just checked my pantry: The Beach Cliff can is best by NOV 2012. Recently I've been buying Crown Prince (a product of Morocco :(), which is good until DEC 2013. Feeling guilty for switching brands. Crown Prince makes a skinless & boneless variety that is nice for lunch at work. I think the skin...

Iditarod endurance race( no, not the dogsled version)

Ghost Trails by Jill Homer would be a great read for anyone who thinks this sounds interesting. She rode this race in 2007 and 2008. Her then boyfriend ran it. When I read this book I could hardly put it down. Excellent read for hiker, cyclist, skier, winter enthusiast, etc. Jill keeps a blog...

Save the date: Third Annual Crawford Notch Christmas Bird Count

I'd like to sign up as well. My husband says it is no longer acceptable for me to prioritize the CBC over family parties now that we have the baby, but should nothing come up (And I'm crossing all my fingers) I'll be there. I think Willard would be reasonable for me again.

That's okay. I know about mountain trail running. It was great to see that going on out there, as I don't expect to get back into it soon. I yelled back to you, "Is this your last 4K?", but I think your music was back up louder than me by then.

distiguishing Bicknell"s thrush from hermit thrush?

Up until 1995, Bicknell's was a sub species of the grey cheeked thrush. Forestgnome, what was the elevation? From the habitat in the photo, I'd guess hermit. Other field marks to look for are a complete white eye ring and buffy flanks = hermit thrush. More greyish eye ring and olive flanks = BT...

    Baby on their backs

Yep, as a new mom who's already lost count of the number of hikes I've done with our baby, I completely agree. With our baby in a front carrier, my husband and I ventured out to her 1st 4000 footer with her this weekend and plan to get out on many more before she walks up herself. Most of the...

The Long Trail 07/07/09 to 07/26/09

Boy, that's just fabulous. This is the first summer in 8 years I haven't been out on the LT, so it was great to read and see the pics on it through your report. I love the Long Trail. Great to see you enjoyed it so much and with so many. Congrats and thanks for posting!

    Bicknell's Thrush question

Wow, great pictures! I surveyed for Mt. Birdwatch last year on this mountain. Bicknell's often return to the same nesting site and could be feeding young at this time. June is the mating season, but if the first brood fails, they will try again. Males feed the nestlings. The nest could contain...

    Higher Altitude Songbird?

A good mnemonic device for the White-throated sparrow is "Old, Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody, " or "Old, Sweet, Canada, Canada, Canada," depending on where you are from. Love that one too.

    Higher Altitude Songbird?

It's a thrush. Probably Swainson's or Hermit. Bicknell's if you've been lucky. They are my favorite too. Here's a link to Swainson's, http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Swainsons_Thrush/sounds. You can find the others here too.
