    Closed WMNF Roads

South end of Tripoli Road was not gated this morning. Flurries fell as we left the area around 1:30. I saw two cars heading south 93 with semi-significant snow on their roofs.

Whitefield/Passaconway was great. It is always good to get out regardless or rain, sleet, snow, or humidity. But I had none- a mild day and great leg stretching opportunity. Hope you got out too. I'm not sure if I ever wrote to tell you it was nice meeting you on Galehead last month. :-) Happy...

    A Lesson in Vocabulary

A baby free hike, I’ve recently started taking these about once a month. Today I chose to hike Whiteface and Passaconaway, not too far from home, not too demanding since I’ve been away from winter conditions hiking for a couple of years. The day treated me very well. I was prepared for cold...

    Eisenhower-Testing My Grit 11/20/10

I guess I know where to go if I want to find winter. Beautiful Alpenglow. Nice job.

    Saturday Nov. 20th hike?

That's great. Is 8:00 reasonable? Maybe 7:30 if you are thinking earlier.

    Saturday Nov. 20th hike?

Hi all, I am hiking this Saturday and just lost my hiking partners. If anyone else is thinking they'd like to get out, maybe we could plan something. My original plan was Whiteface/ Passaconway. Book time for this hike is about 8 hours, and I'd like to be able to stick to at least that. Other...

Save the date: Saturday November 6, Pat and Audrey's potluck

So glad we made it! Audrey and Pat, it was great to see you again. You are wonderful hosts. It was also very nice seeing and meeting so many other VFTTers. Oh yes, and those cookies are fantastic. Next year we'll get a sitter and stay longer.

    MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

Silly reviewer! One of the things I like about this pump is how easy it pump. No excessive upper arm strength expended from my spaghetti string arms. I do agree Backflushing is confusing and so I've never done it. Yet mine works great. I stopped reading when I got to the "sorry ladies" comment.

    MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

I have the Hyperflow, used it on a three week trip and then on a weekend trip. Love it. I find it faster, lighter, more compact, and easier to prevent contamination than any others I've used. It did leak. Trouble shooting led me to a crack in the filter, and EMS replaced it. I read the mixed...

    Training with barefoot running

I have not checked out the other posted links, so I hope mine is not repetitive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jrnj-7YKZE I participated in a New Balance study that gave me a full gait analysis and video taped my running using high speed film. I ran in sneakers, socks, and barefoot. Barefoot...

    Training with barefoot running

I did good amount of barefoot running on a treadmill this past winter. I started after a running injury (IT at the origin, hip) that I blame on my sneakers. Never brave enough to go out on the roads barefoot though. At first I got blisters on my big toes, but eventually I didn't. Sometimes I...

Wapack Trail vs. Long Trail--which is tougher?

The LT vs. Wapack. Hmmm. Wolverine vs. bunny. Just sayin'. Seriously, both are fabulous hikes. But as has been said above the LT is tougher by far. The Wapack can be done in a day, while the LT takes 3-4 weeks on average. I used to be a volunteer mentor for people planning to hike the LT. You...

    disclosing thru-hikers whereabouts etiquette ?

The year I thru-hiked the AT, there was a bit of animosity between a thru-hiker on Trailjournals and a couple thru-hiking who lived along the trail in a small gap. The TJ hiker posted as part of his journal that he had met Couple X from Gap Y and that they were thru-hiking also. Well, Gap Y only...

story for the birders out there

Thanks for posting. Both articles and the pictures were enjoyable. What a place of beauty. I could imagine the montane morning chorus. A wood thrush has returned to the woods behind my house after many year's absence, a pleasant consolation since I've been unable to participate in Mtn. Birdwatch...

Mts Jackson and Pierce with a night at Mizpah

I second that! If you don't mind my asking, how old are your grandgirls? I've got a toddler at home that I am aching to take out to on an overnight like that. We did pack Mondanock (again :)) today.

Thanks Chip. We're going to try to climb Mt. Hale this weekend with the toddler. Yesterday, I had the typical work day workout on the stationary bike in our basement. However, it was preceded by cake and followed by ice cream. :-)
