It's never too early to get the grandchildren addicted to chasing the 48 so I planned to take 2 of them up to a hut for a real introduction to real mountains this year, having spent one night at Lonesome Lake last year.
Forecast was perfect for sunny days but, as happens so often, not quite true.
As we ascended the Crawford Path on Monday with clouds blowing by and only occasional glimpses of sun I wondered about my calculated decision to leave the rain jackets at home! (Grammie was carrying all those "extras") The trail was wet after heavy rain the night before with little rivers running down it much of the way. We made it to the hut safe and dry!
Lunch inside as the wind was blowing but then we set out for Jackson. A good teaching experience crossing the boggy area as we tested the depth with my pole. Fairly decent views from the top of Jackson with just one glimpse of Washington. The girls were fascinated to see the hut "so far away" "we came from over there?".
Met some really great folks from upstate NY who were doing the pressies this week, Ray, John, Gerry, Kath and Margie. Advised them to grab Mt. Washington Tuesday with the clear day rather than their planned visit on Wednesday.
Next morning we woke to bright skies with wispy clouds and were eager to get going up Mt. Pierce. The trail was in great shape and a little more of a challenge for them. On top they oohed and aahed at the sight of the whole Crawford Path winding its way up to Eisenhower and beyond. A perfect day to be doing the ridge. I admit to being very tempted to go for Eisenhower but decided to be sensible (!) and just head down to the car.
Trail is clear of any blowdowns and was much drier than the day before and we were at Gibbs Falls way too early for our planned lunch so had to settle for an icecream on the way home instead.
A great experience for Grumpygran and the two named granddaughters, Elephant Girl and The Cheetah!

Mary . . . that was a perfect hike to introduce your 2 granddaughters to the NH48! The view from Jackson is very nice, and that view from Pierce is the best in the southern Presidentials (at least in my opinion). Also, I know exactly what you mean about the weather looking pretty "iffy" on Monday morning, despite the forecast for a completely sunny day. I had many of the same misgivings as you as I headed up toward Guyot on Monday.

Nice report . . . thanks for sharing.

I wish I had a Gram like you , Mary! :D

I second that! If you don't mind my asking, how old are your grandgirls? I've got a toddler at home that I am aching to take out to on an overnight like that. We did pack Mondanock (again :)) today.

Nice Mary..Karen and i wondered how it was going for you at the hut..Aggressive plans and I am glad that they worked out..sure was a great couple of days in the Whites..I agree with John..view from Pierce is one of the best
