    EMS Burlington to close

Interesting discussion. EMS recently opened a new, large location in Newton, MA right on the Needham line, just off 128. Perhaps they are simply moving away from both the in-mall and smaller, less tech gear footprints. I know two of the reasons that L.L. Bean slammed on the brakes to their...

day hikes in Budapest, Hungary - moved from T&E

Dottie, The Buda side of the Danube River has quite a bit of hills. Depending on the duration of your visit, just walking around the city may give you quite the workout. Also, there is the communist statue garden on the outskits of the city. I was last there in December of 2006 over the...

    Warm Winter Hat

Have had one of these for about five or six years and have been happy with it. And, I've never been called a wookie nor ewok while wearing it. :)

Visiting ponds with an inflatable dinghy

I'm sure many of us (myself included) have daydreamed about our adventures from a different point of view. Nice to see some of us are doing something about it. Wonderful report.

    Kahtoola-MICROspikes vs STABILicers

Okay, you guys got me and now I'm totally intrigued. I'm getting some. It seems these could beat out Garmin for the VFTT "Top Item Wanted Under The Christmas Tree" award. Actually, no one seems to be waiting that long. . .

Does your S.O. read or post here?

VFTT - Not just a repository for hiking enthusiasts, but also eHarmony's number one competition. Now that is fantastic! Great story rocksnrolls.

Does your S.O. read or post here?

Excellent! No for my S.O. She definitely gets outdoors (with me), but doesn't care about the planning, locale, etc. Let me tell you about her first experience with a bear cannister in the Daks in July. . .

Boston Beer Night to Celebrate Mats 40th Bday

Two beer nights within five days. Spectacular! Lucky Lanes (at Jillians) is spacious and should be fun. Great choice. Not so spectacular is that I have a meeting at 6:00. I won't be far away, so I'll head over if it is not too late. Hey Mats - Thanks for being born! You rock.

    Bamforth Ridge

Note that I edited after consulting the Guide Books. In the 70s the LT was relocated west of Bamforth Ridge. The relocation ran west-northwest off Camel's Hump, descending into the Preston Brook basin called Honey Hollow. It met up with a logging road and traveled north for a short distance...

    What breed of dog?

I agree, however, Atticus does take great photos.

    What breed of dog?

Perhaps it is time to approach Tom about cloning Atticus. . .

Boston (sort of) Beer Night -- Nov. 16!

Hmm. . . Sounds like (another) grand 'ole time. I may be able to sneak out to the burbs for this. . . What's the over/under for the time on the clock when we are "politely asked to leave"?

Boston Beer Night Tuesday 8/21 (Date Change)

Not sure if I'll be able to make it (work). . . If I'm not there, have a beer and some fun for me.

Boston Drink of your choice Night

Couldn't have asked for better weather. . . Even at Dooley's. We'll have to do it again soon. I hope everyone has a great extended weekend.

Boston Drink of your choice Night

I'll be there between 4:30 & 5:00. My office is a two blocks up State Street, so I'll probably hear the commotion. Mats, thanks for posting the url with directions. If anyone is still unsure, The Landing is next to the Long Wharf Marriott on the aquarium side.

Boston Drink of your choice Night

JJ Foley's (both of them - Kingston St at Downtown Crossing & the East Berkeley St location in the South End) are still around. There's been a number of places tossed around. Have we reached a concensus? If the weather's nice, the Landing at Long Wharf could work. It is outside and Legal...

    Vermont

From the Long Trail Guide (GMC-25th ed.) page 6: "Snowmelt creates extremely muddy trails and makes them vulnerable to damage from foot traffic, which is often compounded when hikers walk beside the trail to avoid the mud."

    Vermont

I don't think the GMC's request is about churning up mud. It's about those hikers who avoid the muddy areas of the trails by going around them, and thus widening trails. If all hikers stayed on the trail through the mud, this wouldn't be much of an issue.
