    Lake Champlain Bridge closed

Tie an alarm clock to it and we could have the very first "Bridge Out". Guesses anyone?

I had the same issue with VFTT this morning.

Hikers in NH must be prepared -- or pay for rescue

I like your illustrations, but you cite examples in which the person who is making the requests is the [local] taxpayer and hence, has already paid for those municipal services. How about this: Your car breaks down 100 miles from your house. Do you expect to pay for assistance? [If you are a...

Hikers in NH must be prepared -- or pay for rescue

How is 16 bills issued for the 275 rescues cited considered "consistently billed"?

    Lunch on a mult-day hike

I'll second CHEESE (and pepperoni option). I tend to go with blocks of cheddar (Cabot, what else?) because they are easy handle within a ziploc. I'm also big on carrots. They are durable, you can snack on them and you can add them to just about everything.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

AMC Outdoors arrived yesterday with an article titled "Rescue on the Ridge" by Amy VanHaren. In her byline it says she "has spent four years chronicling the extraordinary search-and-rescue community in the Whites." The article is about rescues on Franconia Ridge, however she has a nice section...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

The plan was incomplete, as it should have contained the bailout routes he may need to use along his trek. The trip was scheduled to be 17 miles. Even in the best conditions in the whites, 17 miles is never without its unexpected issues. You are correct. My point is that regardless of...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I agree with much of the premise of your above post. Regarding Mr. Mason being overdue on ending his hike, I believe his trip plan may be part of this problem. I understand that leaving a trip plan is perceived as a responsible action. Once Mr. Mason diverted from his plan (took his shortcut)...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Exactly! So, picking an arbitrary starting point, like the Lewis & Clark expedition, until you began "serious backcountry tripping", about 150 years passed. And, in those 150 years people prepared for survival. It appears over the past 50 years things began to change and progress to the point...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Of course they have incentive. They have already paid for the resources of the operation. Why is this being described as a fine? A fine is a penalty. This is payment for services rendered. Fish & Game, et al. have an incentive [and a responsibility to the state taxpayers] to recover costs...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I agree. There must be an better way to fund these groups, as the expectation of the SAR security blanket is probably not going away. Since the population is far smaller than that of CO and many people come from other states, would it make sense to advertise and offer recreationalists, and...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

The problem is not the definition of negligence, but rather the application. It is the word of the rescued against the word of the rescuers. If costs cannot be recovered, the law will eventually be changed from seeking reimbursement "when negligence is involved" to "when assistance is...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

The same can be said of the person (or party) rescued. I've been thinking for awhile about how to respond without sounding unsympathetic. Unfortunately, I am not terribly sympathetic. If you or someone on your behalf calls for assistance, you should assume it will cost you something...
