Great list! I would suggest that the Loop Trail on Tumbledown has 2 sections that I would consider scrambles.

Favorite Family-Friendly Hikes in New England?

Did you ascend from the East or West? The West Ridge Trail is not very steep and is often used as a great "first big mountain hike" for families. When my kids were younger, they really enjoyed this hike.

    Microspike sizing

I don't know if the sizing has changed, but the current sizing states M 7-11 W 8.5-12. I tried the medium on my size 11 shoes last year and it was tight enough to curl the toe up . Since the store didn't have any large in stock, I didn't get any.

    Speed trap

I have never seen any police when going through the notch. At the southern end of the notch, where there are 4 lanes at the limit is 55mph, I still get passed if I'm doing 65-70.

    Kahtoola versus Hillsounds

I have the Hillsound Trail Crampons which are heavier duty "microspike" with longer spikes and a velcro strap for retention. I find these far superior to the Kahtolas due to the longer "spike" Length. And are on sale at EMS for $47.96 I also picked up a pair of the Hillsound Trail Crampon...

White gas or isobutane stove for winter camping?

I still have a 40 yr old Primus grasshopper, used it last month when car camping, and have used it down to 20 degrees when hiking. I replaced it for hiking with a Coleman Peak 1, but still like using it. Simple design, never failed to work. However, the Coleman is much better in really cold...

Beginner Winter Hiking in the Whites

South Pack is a great beginner winter peak, partially because if you get a little tired going up, you can always walk down the auto road, which is almost always packed out quickly after storms. If you want her to keep hiking with you in winter, I wouldn't overdo it on the 1st hike. Just my $.02...

off Short Line or Valley Way: The stays frozen area under the path is called ?

King Ravine has always been a special place for me. As a teenager living in NJ, I attended a hiking camp that Killington ran. My first introduction to the Whites was hiking up the King Ravine trail. As we emerged into the open floor of the ravine, my jaw just dropped. Many years later I made...

off Short Line or Valley Way: The stays frozen area under the path is called ?

After the subway and the main trail rejoin, and after the Great Gully junction, the trail divides again. Take the right branch to the "caves" and start to explore amoung the boulders. I've always found ice(5 times). VFTT member Trail Trotter found ice in August this year and also in Ice Gulch...

    Government shutdown...

The RMC website has no mention of the shutdown, so I can't comment on their shelters. I can understand about the shelters at Hermit Lake with the reservation system, but how do you close a shelter in the middle of the woods?
