    Worst bug encounters ever

We were going to hammock camp in King Ravine just below Mossy Falls in August a bunch of years ago when we were swarmed by what appeared to be a 2nd hatch of black flies. Even a smoky fire and lots of deet didn't keep them out of our eyes, ears and and mouths when trying to talk. We said screw...

    "NE4KFTR" Liscense Plate

I can't answer, but on my way up to Maine yesterday on afternoon on 93N I passed a black sedan with bikes on a bike rack that had both NH HKR and OLD MAN plates on display in the rear window. I didn't see a VFTT sticker.

Other overnight parking options for Franconia Notch

Liberty to Basin is .8 miles. Basin to OBP is 1.9 on my Map Adventures map State park map says Basin to OBP is 1.7. As far as I know, overnight parking is allowed at the basin as it is the trailhead for the Basin Cascade Trail, we left a car there 10 years ago.

    Presidential Traverse

Thoughts: I'm not sure that I would want to ascend N. Twin, descend off Bondcliff to the Wilderness Trail, and then ascend back up on the Osseo to Flume. Once I'm up on a ridge, I like to stay up! And the section of the N. Twin trail between the river and N. Twin isn't one of my favorites...

    Ladders on Everest

Serious comment on that image-That is insane at 28k+ feet! Looks like Monadnock on Columbus day. Sarcastic comment - Screw the ladders, install a high speed quad!

    Ladders on Everest

Regarding the original subject, it seems that the ladder could case more groups to try to summit on a nice day, which would not really solve the problem. The problem seems to be way too many people in a dangerous place at the same time, with no real cooperation between all the parties involved...

    Ladders on Everest

There is nothing about climbing Everest that appeals to me in the least. Hundred of hikers in line, tons of trash and human waste, waiting over 2 hrs at 28,700, dead bodies, NO THANKS!

New grist for the SAR debate from Brown University study

I prefer the Victorinox Huntsman. Not ultra light but the wood saw and scissors are very useful. I've cut through a 2x4 with the saw.

    Late snow and black flies

A few buzzing around when I parked at the bottom of the Dublin Trail on Monadnock today, but very few on the mountain. Pretty amazing for late May.

    Black Flies

I watched the sunset from S. Pack tonight and I'm glad that it was windy, cause they were biting when they could land on you.

    Insoles for hiking boots...

Depends on how thick your current insole is, and if you need more or less wiggle room in your fit. The responses are 1.6mm thick and and ultras are 3.2mm thick. Unless your current insoles are relatively thick, or your current fit is a little lose, I would stick with the response model. I...

    Insoles for hiking boots...

I have used the Sole Softec heat moldable insoles for years and I love them. They cured major foot pain in my ski boots and my Plantar Fasciitis from hiking is a thing of the past. I have high arches and these mold to your foot contour after heating them in the oven. Everyone has their...

Is there a site that will calculate mileage/elevation for hikes?

Sorry. I thought that it did, but I guess that it's even lower tech than I remembered. It just shows the elevation map.

Is there a site that will calculate mileage/elevation for hikes?

I use Gmaps Pedometer all the time. You can switch from road maps to terrain maps. It's low tech, but so am I!
