I Am the King of Putting My Foot in My Mouth

About 2 years ago in the spring a friend and I hiked Chocorua and Paugus. It was a long cold wet day and I was dragging tail as I made it out to the trailhead. I drove to Hancock campground and found an open site. As I was dragging wet gear out of a wet truck in the rain and not looking forward...

    Fumbling around the Baldfaces 6/24/06

A few years ago I hiked the Baldfaces with two writers from Backpacker magazine. We didn't hit the trail until 2 or 3 in the afternoon so we just went to the shelter for the night and we planned to finish the loop the next day. That night we had some moderate rain (Not torrential, just...

    Whites guidebook

I'll also throw in my support for the Map Adventures map. In my semi-humble opinion it has the cleanest colors and graphics to do a quick map recon of anyplace in most of the Whites. It's drawbacks ( I don't have the map in front of me so I'm working from an iffy memory) are that it doesn't...

Mt Glastenbury AT/LT Vermont Sun 6/11

I did this same trip as a backpack about a month ago. I parked on 71 and hiked south to Glastenbury ,staying at Goddard shelter. I didn't see a soul on the hike in or out, but the shelter was full that night. Most people seem to hike in from Rt 9. It was a great trip and the views from the fire...

    What's in your "Fix" kit?

For snowshoe repairs besides wire, tape, and zip ties I carry a couple stainless hose clamps. In an emergency they're strong enough to hold the binding on to the shoe.

    Agressive bird stories

We had a screech owl in the family when I was a kid. Although she never "attacked" a person in her 14 years, she would take the occasional swoop at the cat. The cat was a lion to the neighborhood dogs but always left the owl a respectable distance.

    Winterizing you canister stove

This technique is covered in the most recent edition of The Complete Walker by Colin Fletcher. p.312 " if you build a similar device (which, understand, I don't urge you to do) you can blow yourself up in any of several ways." This warning follows the instructions for a heater...

    Bushwacking convention in November

Most excellent idea, Jean. For the sake of post'erity, we need to give this soon-to-be annual event the proper title. I'm thinking along the lines of The Post'r Boy Semi-Invitational Whackfest (insert year here). Who's with me?

Purchase parking pass on the phone?

I need to renew my yearly pass (White Mountains) but probably won't make it up to NH Friday night until after the ranger stations close. Is it possible to purchase one on the phone or online?

    GPS oddity

I have a Vista and have another strange problem. Every so often the GPS decides that it's thousands of miles from it's actual location. This past weekend I was using it on a whack of Big Coolidge in the Whites. I had the summit waypointed and occasionally checked my progress on the Vista. As I...

    CT hiking

About 15 miles northeast of New London is the town of Voluntown. Here you will find the Pachaug State forest which is riddled with trails. Many of them are part of the blue-blazed trail system maintained by the Connecticut Forest and Park Assn. (www.ctwoodlands.org). A short hike will take you...

    My First VFTT Decal Sighting

Yesterday on my way home from the Whites I had my first highway encounter with a VFTT decal. It was on a light colored Tacoma with Mass plates just before the tolls on 93. I guess our legions are growing. Pretty cool....

    Lightweight tents with high ceilings

I use a Megamid and ,as jbreen suggested, it stands about 5 feet tall at the center. Plenty of headroom (for me anyway).

    water at guyot

I stayed at Guyot shelter last weekend and the spring was running as strong as I have ever seen it. It's the sweetest water in the Whites at the best campsite. I was there last week and I'm already envious of you. I forgot to mention that, on Mem. Day weekend, there was copious snow (2-3...

Kelty Noah's Tarp, fly alternatives ?

I have a Noahs 9 that I use along with my bivy all the time. I carry it with four bungee cords and can set it up in about a minute in most situations. I had it set up at 13 Falls this past weekend and had a few people check it out and ask about it.

    Mt. Chocorua

On May 7, MarkJ and I did Chocorua via Champney Falls trail and on to Paugus on the Bee Line. The Champney Falls trail was clear up to the switchbacks (about 2500 feet) and then hardpack snow and ice to treeline. Above treeline there was no snow, just the occasional light glaze of rime ice. We...

    Whack loop Nancy - Bemis

"IMHO this old trail and a possible new trail over to Nancy down to Norcross would be a good candidate for "new trail" status as a nice loop. Anyone know how this might be approached as a suggestion to the USFS?" I spoke with woman who lives near the Nancy Pond trailhead (and who has run...

    Whack loop Nancy - Bemis

Several of us did this very hike during Post'r Boy's Whackfest this past fall. In the season's first snow, we hiked the old firewardens' trail to the tower site. Outside of the occasional blowdown, the trail was well-defined and easy to follow. From the tower site we whacked over to the true...
