One bunk left as a wildcard.
I'm heading up North and can't reply. If you'd like to join us, be the first person to post here and show up on Saturday afternoon.
My foolish friends and I are having our annual Fool Scout Ball at Lonesome Lake Hut this Saturday (3/28). We have a deep-fried turkey dinner with all the trimmings, wine, and french toast, bacon & sausage for breakfast. Plenty of extras the other guests are bringing.
We have the entire hut...
Hell of a party, UFC! Thanks. It was nice to see everyone.
Great tunes, fun crowd, big fire - a lot of great but fuzzy memories.
I hope to be fully recovered by this time next year. ;)
Let me state first that the original plan was to finish my run and head out the the Boston beer night at the Burren.
It had been a hell of a day, and I had recently read some sobering material on the value of beer as a post-run recovery drink. I cracked open a Long Trail Ale and became...
Date of Hike:2/28/09
Trail Conditions: Water crossings manageable, a lot of branches to negotiate along ascent up Signal Ridge.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes for the whole route. Microspikes handy in the parking lot.
Comments: Great day and views, surprisingly large amount of hikers...
I love these articles and the collective naval gazing it provokes in the online hiking community.
There is often safety in numbers, and this point gets belabored, debated, and discussed to death nearly every time there is incident in the woods.
Almost everyone sees some level of risk every day...
Great meeting everyone.
Things really gelled together well. Steve got the first section started. Rick managed us all into a trailbreaking machine. Adam and Bucky brought an enthusiasm and determination not usually seen in newer hikers. Per usual, I played the Fool, and Jen's cheerful...
Another viewless day on Mount Moosilauke. It was awesome.
Gary (scoutmaster) and I met up with Brian (New Hampshire) and Amy (getawaygirl) for the carpool up to Moosilauke, where Karen (HappyHiker) was already geared up and waiting.
Temps were fairly reasonable, and our pace relaxed as we...
It's true that we are only guaranteed two things in life - death and taxes.
Let's be grateful it's the latter this time.
With proposed Massachusetts toll increases and possible new locations, eventually I expect I'll be charged every 20-30 miles between here and my hikes.
If I'm lucky...
You've heard of the mitten lost walkin'
and the verses that got people talkin'.
But there on the ground
what was lost has been found
by that hiking machine called Ed Hawkins!
So let us all raise a loud cheer
for the rescuer of my mitten so dear.
Hip! Hip! Hooray!
for the news made my day
and to...
Steve and I hiked up to Mount Hale
upon a frozen post-holed trail
On Zealand Road while sittin'
I lost a down mitten
If you find it, please send it by mail.
;)
The silence of winter is displaced by the relentless CRUNCH of snowshoes on the crust. Hoary ice clings to everything, exploding into fireworks of prisms during the rare beams of sunlight. Overhead the skies are grey, but hold the echo of sunrise on the horizon in almost all directions.
We...
Hey! I resemble that! I still maintain that the really bad joke is just as fascinating in construction as a good one. I'm almost ashamed to admit, and some here could testify - we were FAR from the bottom of the barrel.
I had a blast hiking the Ossipees with all of you. There really...
