    Legal to Bike up Moosilauke?

That might work. I'm willing to bet there's no "No Segway" signs.

    Legal to Bike up Moosilauke?

I once saw someone go up the road on a four wheeler, two four wheelers actually. They were taking the fire/rescue crew to a girl who was having an asthma attack between the Main and South summits. It didn't look like a ride I'd like to take anytime soon. The guy on the was getting bounced...

What gear do you plan to add this year?

Ed, I read your post about 1 hour too late. You're right about the battery compartment. It does get easier, a little, after you've done it a few times. If you rotate the bracket past 90 degress, a bump on the bracket depresses the battery door and it pops open. I keep lithium batteries in...

    red bull energy drink

How About Powergel? A freind of mine suggested that I carry a couple packets of Powergel in my pack. She said she uses it toward the end of the day when her energy levels start to drop off (knowing her, that is an impossibility). I took her advice and always carry several packs. Everytime I...

What gear do you plan to add this year?

I'm looking to get a Black Diamond Spot headlamp. I was amazed by how bright it is for an LED. Bob, I use bread bags for VBL socks. I prefer wheat. My feet tend to sweat profusely but are surprisingly comfortable with the bags over a poly liner sock.

Please suggest a NH 4k I can complete before 1:26PM.

Hi Cannon is OK but I prefer the Kinman Ridge Trail from the ski area. I'm always impressed by the views of the Franconia Ridge from atop Cannon Cliffs. I like it better than the view from the actual summit. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure other people will have differing opinions. Glenn

    Winter 48 in 9 Days

Great job Tim and Cath (Jeff and Drewski too) Had I known you guys were on the path to greatness, I wouldn't have stopped to talk to Cath on the North Twin Trail. That had to have cost you a few minutes. :D Glenn

    Magnificent Mount Monadnock in March

Nice report Roxi. No snobbery on my part. I've had lots on fun on the southern peaks. When my current obsession is over on March 20th, I'm looking forward to hitting Monadnock, Pack and North Pack, Kearsarge and Cardigan. Happy trails, Glenn

    Time to Buy Snowshoes

I have the older style Altitudes (TD91 binding) and the Mountains. They're both 25 inches (I'm in the 200 lb. range). The crampons on my Altitudes are aluminum and quite worn. The current Altitudes have the Bear Hug binding. That seems to be one that you either love or hate. I have heard...

    Time to Buy Snowshoes

I was just looking at the EMS website. They have big discounts on Tubbs and Atlas snowshoes. I recently bought a pair of the Tubbs Mountain 25. I used them on a recent trip to the Hancocks and was very impressed with their performance. One caution though, the viper crampons on them are very...

    Bareboots or Snowshoes?

I had an issue with snowshoes coming back from Isolation. As I crossed a snow bridge, it gave way. My snowshoes acted like a ships rudder. With the water rushing against them, I couldn't move until I repositioned my arms to get more leverage. All the while, Jim Lombard was perched...

    Summit of Mt Waumbek

There were actually two signs in the Waumbek summit area. One said: Starr King Trail To Mount Starr King US Route 3 <- (Pointed back to Starr King) This sign was wrapped in blue tape. Didn't see a cairn. If it was there, it was covered with snow. The other sign was for the Kilkenny Ridge...

    Summit of Mt Waumbek

I have a picture I took when I went up Waumbek in July 2002. There was a sign that read "Waumbek, 4006." I went up there on February 10th and didn't see the sign. I too went to the Kilkenny Ridge Trail sign. My GPS track shows I was clearly past the summit high point. You're good; you don't...

    Challenging...yet short

How about Kearsarge North I throwing in a vote for North Kearsarge. It is accessed from the Mt Kearsarge North Trail on Hurricane Road in North Conway. The trail gains 2,600 ft over 3.1 miles. It has moderate grades over its entire length so you can really fly. The summit has an enclosed...

On Top of the World, Ma! - Garfield 16/Jan/05 - Number 48!

Why Andrew Why? I was wondering the same thing all day. Man that was cold. The thrill of the day came when the ice inside my shell melted on the way home. :( Cold and wet; what a way to end the day.

    Cold Hands

I second Roxi's vote for smartwool liners. These are much warmer than the poly pro liners I was using; and more comfortable too. You can get them at Sierra Trading Post.

    Coffee before a hike

Never used to drink it before a hike but like Neil, I heard it helps in metabolizing fat. I need all the help I can get.

    Osseo Trail

Haven't seen any recent reports on the Osseo Trail. Has anyone been there lately? I'm planning on going up Liberty Spring and out on Osseo. thanks, Glenn

    48 Summits GPS Waypoints?

Be aware that the Topo software does not support USB connections out of the box. I have a Garmin Vista C and found that I had to purchase the Streets and 3D Views expansion pack to enable USB support.

    Vision is a wonderful thing

Great to hear you're pleased with the outcome. I've had one eye done with LASEK and am getting the other done on Jan. 25th. I can't wait.
