    Long Trail 12

I don't want to hijack the thread here, nor act like a grumpy law enforcer, but if you see groups doing that the only way to combat that behavior is to let them know it's a pain in the butt for other hikers to deal with it. Or see if their camp/college/etc. has been in contact with GMC's group...

    Long Trail 12

Although if you see a college group in the shelters, you would certainly be in the right to remind them that their orientation trip leaders have been told over and over again to not use the shelters on their trips. Same goes for boyscouts and camp groups. The GMC works with all their trip...

    Winter trip to Jackman?

Just checking with the more knowledgeable people here... I've got this desire to head up to Jackman ME sometime this winter with my girlfriend, stay for a couple days, and do some snowshoeing on some of the mountains near there. I haven't researched this much yet, but I really like the looks of...

    Long Trail 12

Hah. My plans are still in the embryonic phase, but I'll definitely let you know how things progress. If I get around to the LT, regardless of when I'm planning more on the 2-3 week time frame, but we'll see :) As for being nearby... I do have a strong desire to spend a lot of time in the...

    Long Trail 12

Jeez. I wanna hike with you, now :) Glad to hear it's working out. Hopefully I'll see you on the trail, or we'll see each other in shelter registers. I can't wait to thru-hike this trail!

    Long Trail 12

Not sure here, either. There's nothing wrong with late July-- it's June that would be bad. If my plans work out ideally, I'd be looking at August, but I really have no idea at this point. Probably won't have a good idea of it until May. Dream big... some of it has to come true :)

    Long Trail 12

Any idea when you'll be out there, Chaco Taco? I'm hoping to do the end-to-end as well this summer, but I don't know exactly when. From the time I spent in Vermont and the section hikes I did on the LT, my impression is that if you've done the AT, the logistics of the Long Trail should be a...

    Google map of NH 48

Interesting. I never noticed they had trails on there. I wonder where they get the data for those... I know for roads they often get government data, then trace over satellite images to double-check, but trails out here don't show up very well on aerial imagery. Is it possible, Google will...

    Long Trail 12

There are a few shelters north of killington where there are fees, but easily avoided if you want to (they're really great shelters, though) and very well signed ahead of time. Resupply... so many great places. Hostels... not so many.

Rescue: "half naked and high on mushrooms"

Sounds like a zombie movie is about to start.

City of wind quickly developing in Kern

The short answer to that question is yes. What bothered me more, though, was walking directly under them and feeling like if one of those blades popped off, the search parties wouldn't be able to find the smear that used to be me.

City of wind quickly developing in Kern

Fascinating, indeed. Here's the view from the PCT where it goes by the giant farm. If I recall correctly, there were plenty of other views where you could see even more of the turbines, but this is the pic I still have at the moment. More located here.

City of wind quickly developing in Kern

Walked through a portion of that on the PCT, and it was truly mind-boggling seeing those things up close and then seeing that they just went on as far as the eye could see. Thanks for the article. I needed some good reading.

    Mountain Hardwear Dry.Q Elite fabric

Part of the article at BPL mentioned that eVent partnered with a bunch of companies to let the other companies use eVent under their own names, and apparently the DryQ is one of these. Must be some kind of difference, though, because I'd always heard eVent was more breathable than Gore-Tex...

NHHH finish on Lowell & Anderson

That's pretty intense... sleeping in the cars and still starting at 5? Yow! And great views from those two mountains. I can't wait to get up there myself. But I'll consider myself warned about the dense forest up top. Love the trip report. Congratulations!

    Mountain Hardwear Dry.Q Elite fabric

Backpackinglight.com ran a series of tests on a bunch of new waterproof breathable jackets last month to see how all these new fabrics stack up, since it seems like almost every manufacturer this year has come out with something "twice as breathable as Gore-Tex!" Here's a link to the final part...

    Broad Brook Trail ruins

Becca, thanks for the info. I guessed a mill or something like that, but I think the sluiceway ran more or less away from the river. Although it was at the bottom of a valley, so it must have run back to the river at some point. I'll have to head back there at some point, anyway. I just love...

    Broad Brook Trail ruins

A little over a week ago I was on the Broad Brook Trail near Williamstown MA. I came across some old ruins that seemed pretty interesting. Does anyone have any idea what they used to be? They were maybe a hundred feet west of the brook, and included what was possibly a cellar hole foundation and...

Lauky finishes round three on Carrigain

Very cool! I didn't realize Lauky and you had done the 48 so many times. I met you on Carrigain in 2009, and I guess that means he was still on his first or second round. I hope I can catch up with him someday :)
