    Redington and Spaulding sub-4000 feet?

I was just out on the AT in Maine, and I noticed that on the Maine AT maps (2004 edition), along with on the Spaulding summit sign, Spaulding and Redington are both listed as below 4000 feet (3988 and 3984 feet). Anybody know when that changed?

Elephant Mountain (NEHH) access from AT?

Perfect. Thanks, all three of you! I suspected the AT wasn't a good route when all of the trip reports I'd seen came from the logging roads, so maybe I'll pass on the peak for this trip, since it'll be a backpacking trip on the AT. A day hike from the logging roads sounds like the preferred route.

Elephant Mountain (NEHH) access from AT?

Hey folks, I'm planning on hiking a section of the AT starting early next month, and if I can get to Elephant Mountain, I may try to knock that off my NEHH list. I've been through that area three times before on the AT, but I don't remember the Clearwater Brook Trail (marked on USGS quads)...

    Change to RMC Hut Fees

The $5 fee for the GMC fee sites is considerably lower than the RMC cabins or AMC huts. And as far as I remember, AMC's $8 shelters and campsites in the Whites don't have a member discount. Also, the GMC fee sites all have free shelters and campsites within a three to four mile radius (with the...

    Change to RMC Hut Fees

Good to know. Somehow I've never stayed at any of their shelters/campsites, but I've been planning on it for a while. Maybe this will be the summer...

What's your favorite GPS app for iPhone 5?

I'll put in a vote for Gaia GPS. It occasionally goes on sale for half price (I got it for $9.99 at some point), so keep an eye out. I've also tried "Topo Maps" ($7.99, and not bad at all, but less features than Gaia), and MotionX GPS (can't remember price, but cheap). Of the ones I've tried...

Transitioning Back to Work after a Thru-Hike

There are definitely those of us (like me!) who really suck at getting back into the life of careers and domesticity, but I think in most cases that's a... shall we say "pre-existing condition." RollingRock is right that it has a lot to do with how you see that kind of life before you head out...

How does outdoor recreation impact the economy?

That's pretty cool! I wish I'd had that link to point to during an argument I had with someone last summer on the trail about the value of outdoor recreation... Also, I shouldn't be surprised that Maine's numbers are higher than New Hampshire's, but I still am. That's pretty cool.

    Grout Pond, VT in winter

I was there last month for a day trip, and it looked like the east side of the pond had no snowmobile activity. The road to the pond from Kelley Stand Road is a snowmobile trail, but I only saw one pair of snowmobiles on it during the entire day. It looked like if you stuck to the east side of...

Parking near Stratton Pond in winter?

I went to the mountain today, and the road was definitely plowed out all the way to the AT/LT crossing. A pretty popular trailhead today, too... gorgeous day, great trail.

    Okemo area activities

Hey GBKDalton, you are right-- I went there today and had an interesting time at the Healdsville Trail parking area-- the road is plowed just past the railroad crossing, but is just a snowmobile trail to the actual parking lot. I got my car stuck on the snowmobile trail, stupidly following a set...

Parking near Stratton Pond in winter?

I guess I'll just wing it and let you all know what I find. Luckily, day one of the weekend will just be getting into the pond, which maybe be a bit of distance, but at least it's flat as a board.

    Okemo area activities

Speaking of the Healdsville trail on Okemo and any of the major trails on Ascutney, does anyone know what the writer accessibility of those is? The Okemo state park map says the Healdsville trailhead isn't maintained in winter, but I don't know of there are any places nearby to park. I haven't...

Parking near Stratton Pond in winter?

That sounds perfect to me. Thanks for the info, bcskier. In the past, I have made a loop hike (in warmer months) by parking at the AT/LT crossing, heading AT North over Stratton Mountain and to Stratton Pond, then back to the road by the Stratton Pond Trail. It's only a half mile or so on the...

Parking near Stratton Pond in winter?

I'm planning on spending the weekend at Stratton Pond in a couple weeks, so I probably should have asked this earlier, but does anyone know how far into the Stratton-Arlington Road you can get in winter? I'd take either the Catamount Trail or the Stratton Pond Trail into the pond. I'm guessing...

NYT article on the Tunnel Creek avalanche

Finished the article late last night, and... whoah. I must have been living under a rock all year, because I never knew about the incident. Strange to think-- I think I walked right by where the avalanche was a few years ago, since the PCT goes over the summit of Stevens Pass. I only went back...

NYT article on the Tunnel Creek avalanche

I started reading this at work this evening... er... I mean after work. Holy cow, long article, but really engrossing format. I wonder if this is going to be the new trend. I can see the news becoming much more interesting :) Only about a third of the way in so far. I wonder if I can finish it...

RIP Maine Woods National Park - Wilderness protection to multiple use

I'm with you. Not necessarily for a National Forest, but it would be awfully nice to have a more cohesive conservation and recreation approach-- between The Nature Conservancy, AMC, various state lands, private conservation land, and just private land, the AMC's map of the area looks like a...

    Winter Long Trail hike!

No. Not easier at all! :) I would LOVE to do the LT in winter. But probably only in theory. Probably, once I get out there, I'd just want to go home after a few days. But it still sounds pretty awesome.

    Winter Long Trail hike!

I mentioned this at some point last year or the year before, but there was a couple from somewhere in Maine who tried to hike the LT last winter, and after it was mentioned, I heard no news of it ever again. Until today! I just picked up the Winter LT News, and the last page of the issue has a...
