    disorientation at Pawtuckaway SP

I've been to Pawtuckaway SP about 10 times in the past 5 years and have probably gotten lost* at least 5 times... would have blamed it on myself but I just had a conversation w/ other friends who have had similar experiences, and I don't seem to have this problem on other trails. what gives...

    Terry Frost dies at 88‏

:-( I met him once; he co-led a seminar on trail maintenance. He is also notable as one of several (two?) people who donated the land on which the Society for the Protection of NH Forests now has its headquarters in Concord.

Agree 100%. Well stated. Please parse this along with its subtleties. My take on it: - not everyone posting to this thread thinks that private landowners need convincing one way or the other. (yup.) - there's plenty of public land in New Hampshire. (agreed. 784,000 acres WMNF + 200,000 acres...

whoa! just to clarify: I did not mean to use the word privilege in a legal sense. That is what I think we've been hung up on a lot in this thread: what does the law say is legal or illegal or guaranteed or forbidden. I meant in an ethical sense. If the public is guaranteed access to a piece of...

That's exactly the reason that it's not a good idea to make a map without getting permission from landowners. There's nothing illegal about it, but showing trails on a map carries with it the implication that it is acceptable to use those trails. TB -- it's a beautiful map, and one day I would...

    AMC Executive Director pay

well... perhaps, but tourism jobs aren't really something that brings a lot of pay to the North Country... i've spoken to some planning folks in the area and they need more "real" jobs. Though I guess the service sector (plumbing/electrical/etc.) benefits slightly from any new operation in town...

    Pawtuckaway trail conditions?

thanks! --- update: went to loop around North Pawtuckaway Mountain. The only really icy / slippery part was between North Mountain and Rocky Ridge... also I lost the trail there (no other hikers which was odd for a Saturday) but rejoined near the Boulder Field. A nice day!

 Why not? if there's a clear list of things that the landowners want taken off, + all parties can agree that w/o those items a map is ok, there could be an updated map. He just needs written permission of the landowners in question to comply with it. If one landowner in particular is...

right, we're getting a little off topic here, what with the mini-flame war.... just to underscore the point that Chomp made, and I agree with, it's not the fact that Falendar makes $300K that bothers me. Rather, that high salary seems to be one of many symptoms of "flashiness" that the AMC has...

    Pawtuckaway trail conditions?

anyone been over at Pawtuckaway SP (southeastern NH for you non-locals) within the last few days? what's the snow / ice cover like? (I am debating whether to hike the North Mountain with snowshoes or stabilicers or go elsewhere)

(alpine convention of Neils?) ditto. When I first heard about the Maine Woods Initiative, I was thrilled and made a donation. Now it's just shoved in our face in the magazine too much (Stay at our Camp X in the Maine Wilderness!!!), and really leaves a sour taste in my mouth... I just...

The land trusts have wised up in recent years, and now in reward for their donation of a conservation easement, most easement donors are asked to contribute several thousand dollars in order to fund stewardship costs in the coming years/decades/centuries.
