    Pemi Wilderness Bridge Removal Project

So it is what it is. I'd suggest expressing your views to your congresspersons in regards to the Wilderness mechanism in general.

    The Nubble

I think we should just call it Peak Below the Peak Above the Nubble, or PBTPATN for short.

    whatsit: rescue sled?

saw this hiking above Tuckerman Ravine. Is it a sled for rescues? if so, how do you get to it when it's buried in snow?

Poll on Maps of Conservation Easements

Roy -- are you pointing Trustees of Reservations out as an example of a private landowner, or as an alternative to SPNHF's approach? (Trustees of Reservations is sort of the Massachusetts equivalent of SPNHF: both are statewide private land trusts that own numerous reservations generally open to...

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

This is (IMHO) less about numbers and facts, and more about respect and disrespect and violation and power and leverage and betrayal and goodwill. If I were one of the landowners involved, I'd want to see my side of the story listened to and respected, and I'd want to hear some tangible step...

Good points, both of you. Roy: some federal dollars come with strings attached to require recreational access, others don't. I'm pretty sure Land & Water Conservation Fund requires it, not sure about Forest Legacy Program. I guess my take on guaranteed recreational access, is that while we as...

Poll on Maps of Conservation Easements

SPNHF has a PDF on conservation easements. Some of it is specific to the state of New Hampshire but most of it is pretty general.

Poll on Maps of Conservation Easements

My 2c: Maps showing topography and property boundaries are fine and should be encouraged. Any other information about resources on the property (trails, stone walls, cellar holes, cemeteries, swimming holes, rare plants, outlooks, deer yards, etc. etc.) should be subject to the landowner's...

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

I don't think you can fully appreciate the situation of having someone abuse private property, until you experience it first-hand on property you own/manage/monitor. It is such a sense of violation and powerlessness, far worse than seeing an abuse of someone else's property. w/r/t the "lunatic"...

    post-rain Welch/Dickey?

So did anyone go hiking on Welch/Dickey on Sunday after all the rain on Saturday? If so please post, as I'm curious how long it takes the rain to drain from the ledges sufficiently for an enjoyable hike.

That's not the way a conservation easement works. A conservation easement is a permanent legal document, in force forever. If the conditions are broken for whatever reason, the easement grantee (federal govt + perhaps the state of NH or LRCT... I'm not sure) has both the right and...

Some hiking in the Pacific Northwest

Appears to be a Polemonium sp (perhaps P. pulcherrimum... P. viscosum = sky pilot has lots of sticky hairs) and a Penstemon maybe. The Penstemon I have no idea, there are way too many Penstemon spp. in the western states for mere mortals to comprehend.

Some hiking in the Pacific Northwest

Had another moment and got out my Peterson's Guide to Pacific States Wildflowers. My guess on the yellow aster is either Balsamorhiza hookeri, or Hulsea nana. I vote for the Hulsea: (from http://www.mountainflora.ca/Flora_of_the_Coast_Ranges/Hulsea_nana.html: )

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

Interesting discussion. There's nothing wrong with publishing publicly available information. Things like terrain, topography, and feature names (e.g. "Mt Shaw") are public information. Even property boundaries are public information. The problem is that publishing trail locations...

Some hiking in the Pacific Northwest

what audrey and darlene said.... [[sound of arghman getting out last year's Glacier NP plant books]] http://www.summitpost.org/view_object.php?object_id=538911 = a Phacelia (hastata?) of some sort; waterleaf family flowers are very distinctive w/ stamens sticking out quite a ways...

What kind of Lady's Slipper is this??

ok, you want more than a gut call... well, we have a little leftover hood where the flower was and a fuzzy stem, both look like C. acaule. The habitat is totally wrong for any of the other Cyprepedium species in the northeastern US, all of which like moist circumneutral or calcareous soil to my...

What kind of Lady's Slipper is this??

I second (third?) the mutant Cypripedium acaule hypothesis. Either that or it's a hybrid. (yeah, that's it! we blame hybrids a lot)

Do you take painkillers, ibuprofen, etc. when hiking?

if I were hiking a very long/strenuous hike, something I don't do often, I'd probably take some vitamin N (naproxen -- since ibuprofen & me do not agree) beforehand. Won't do it regularly, but it would be good to keep the inflammation down + recover more quickly.
