Flags on the 48 - 2011 - The Ten Year Anniversary

That's great news, SilentCal. It was this Saturday that I was there, so it makes sense that there has been progress made since then... at the time, there was a large blockade on the road past the t/h parking, with a "road closed" sign, so there was no going through at that time unless you moved...

Flags on the 48 - 2011 - The Ten Year Anniversary

I can confirm that - I was at the Tripoli road trailhead Saturday. Tripoli road is closed right after the Osceola trail parking area, but is driveable up to that point.

White Mountain National Forest Open as of Tuesday 8/30/2011

Did not see any mud on the new section of the Gale River trail yesterday. Some patches on the original trail, but none of any real consequence.

Date of Hike: 08/30/11 Trail Conditions: Gale River Loop Road looks good as new. Gale River Trail in surprisingly good shape considering weather event. Lots of minor debris, a few minor washed out areas, and only one major blowdown, now removed. Relocation section still nice and soft. Some...

    Eagle Cliff

Nice! Eagle Cliff is one of my favorite spots to hang out on a warm day. That "ski trail" looks really interesting - I've wandered around in there quite a bit but have never seen it. Hopefully you put up some flagging so I can go find it? :D ;) Thanks for sharing!

Lafayette the Hard Way - 08/23/2011

The terrain was getting steeper, now: More views opening up below: Another cascade – this one was an interesting ledge to climb around: Finally, we hit the 4000’ mark, the water flow started to dwindle, and the stream took a right fork. We opted for the drier, left fork. Heading up...

Lafayette the Hard Way - 08/23/2011

For a long time now, I’ve always wanted to explore the ravine of Lafayette Brook, which runs straight up the western face of this great peak. I’ve been up the ravine a mile or so to visit several cliffs, as well as explored the ridges on both sides, but I’ve never continued further up the brook...

1926..... A Summer on the Dome

Sunday, September 19, 1926 Started out for Norton this morning in Chandler car, connecting rod knocking in Jefferson turned us back. Bad knock got worse as we went on. Back in Gorham took out Ford racer and went to Glen Ellis Falls, Shelburne and Berlin. Monday, September 20, 1926 Came into...

1926..... A Summer on the Dome

Friday, August 27, 1926 Today is fish day, so they all say. But up here over 400 feet in the air it just means one more day in the blanket of clouds that have been down since Monday AM. They have lifted many times to give us a view of the rest of the mountain and forest below us, but not for...

1926..... A Summer on the Dome

Wednesday, August 4, 1926 Well, both had a nice ice cool bath in 19 Mile Brook this morning below the slides. It gives pep and strength to the muscles. Hurrah! The wind is blowing hard and the flies are gone so far that we honestly hope it will be time for snow to fall before they get back, but...

1926..... A Summer on the Dome

When cleaning up some of my grandmother's possessions, I came upon a very old, ragged notebook filled with faint penciled script. It took me a while to realize that it was a daily journal written by my grandfather when he was a young man of 20 and working in Pinkham Notch. After picking my way...

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

Too funny! I've had a few angry grouse encounters, but no Black Knight grouses yet, thank goodness! :D Oh, oh, I see, running away then. You yellow *******! Come back here and take what's coming to you. I'll bite your legs off! ;)

    Franconia ridge questions

Bugs are much better than they were a few weeks ago. Some insect spray should suffice. Bridle Path is longer, more gradual, and more views en-route. FW is shorter, steeper, ledgy and rockier and has no views, but many nice waterfalls. Both directions have their charms... I prefer OBP up in...

Tunnel Brook-Mt. Clough - Sunday 7/17/11 - Easy going hike

That turn can be easy to miss. There is a Wildwood historic marker sign that is easier to spot than the road sign right at the correct intersection.

The Trifecta- Great Gully, Sphinx and Six Husbands Trails

Ouch! That hurt just reading about such an epic hike! You should have topped it off with a descent down King Ravine. Great photos and narrative! I especially like the shot of the Jefferson Ravine bog - looks like a cool spot.

    Gale River Tr crossings

Very real - the re-route was almost done when I walked it last month. Last word was that it should be open by sometime this summer.
