Ahh... I think I will soak up those beautiful blues in your photo of the Presidentials! What a nice report - thanks for sharing that!

Mount Crawford via Davis Path 02/03/11

Trail Conditions: Got to the trail head to find someone had already started up. Caught up with them within the first quarter-mile. Nice guy who did not know where the trail was, so I took lead and broke trail all the way to the top. Snow was about 10 inches deep at the bottom, up to about...

    Groundhog's Day Storm, 2011

I think there was about 8 inches of accumulated powder at Bretton Woods today, but it was hard to tell since I didn't stop much. :D

    Old Photo Trivia

Since there have been no more takers, the last two photos are: #10--Lonesome Ridge Lookout Tower. This tower used to be located just north of Godfrey Dam near Mount Cabot. #11--"Camp 19", also in the Kilkenny area. Photo taken in 1927. Since the old Camp 18 was on the route of today's...

    Old Photo Trivia

Imp shelter it is! The photo caption reads: "Imp Shelter Hut USFS April 1927". I haven't been able to find any other photos of this old structure. There is one online from around 1910 that does not look anything like it.

    Old Photo Trivia

Yes, number 3 is a roadside photo of East Royce in 1937. That is really interesting about the Laughing Lion! I wondered the same thing about the name, but looking at the photo now I can really see it! Thank you for pointing that out! And, yes, number 9 is indeed the Mount Cabot lookout...

    Old Photo Trivia

Great guesses! Motabobo and nartreb are correct with photo #1 - it is the fire tower on Middle sister. Number 2 is also correct for Motabobo - The original photo caption reads "Eagle Lake Hut AMC". Not sure if this was a "working title" for Greenleaf Hut or not as it was being constructed -...

    Old Photo Trivia

Every now and then someone starts a thread with some old photos for us to try to identify. I've always found it quite interesting, so here is my attempt! Some of these might be a challenge - I put the easier ones first. All are State Park or WMNF related, all within northern New Hampshire...

    An Adventure Thru Livermore Pass

A very entertaining report! That certainly looks like a nice area to visit in the winter.... minus swimming in the bog, of course! :D

anyone own Kahtoola MTN Step-In Snowshoes ?

I've owned the predecessor to these - the Kahtoola FlightDeck TS - for about two winters now. It's a great feature to be able to pop the snowshoe frames off and on as needed, and so far I haven't had any issues with wear on the posts. Flotation is OK, too, though the 24" was the only size...

Your Top 10 Photos of 2010...

I've just enjoyed a half hour or so viewing the beautiful photos on this post. Wow - what a great bunch of shots! I have a hard time picking a favorite, there are so many! Though, I think "Iced Pine on the Tripyramids" is at the top of the list. I scraped around and found a few of my own to...

The Willey Range on a Beautiful Winter Day (30-Dec-2010)

John, that was indeed an incredible day to be outdoors! Beautiful weather and tons of snow! One of those select snowshoe trips that will linger in my memory. :D Kirby enjoyed the summit of Avalon; here she is looking regal (though she really was staring intently at two greyjays who were...

Maybe old news by now, but I'm measuring about 18" of new snow in the backyard here in Bethlehem. Should be some fun trailbreaking coming up soon!

    HDR tips, please!

Like DougPaul said, HDR is best avoided if possible, as it can create surreal images instead of a natural looking dynamic range. I have a friend who uses HDR heavily to create surreal artwork; interesting as art, but as photography I am not certain. However, if you have a composition that is...
