Let's Talk About Disgusting Back Sores

Eeee-eeewwww! Have you cut way back on fats? You might look into a vitamin E supplement for skin health. Also, you might considering changing shirts a couple times in the course of a hike. Back when I flirted with death by wearing cotton T's I would usually change on the trail.

St George had his dragon, I have my skunk.

    'Whackin Baxter

Actually, this is only my 2nd trip to Baxter. Like, I climbed Katahdin in the 70s, Maaaa-aaan! My father and I did all the 4Ks in the park and I continued on to some NEHH peaks. I believe Fort was one and the second might have been Coe.

    Fun with Poison Ivy

Salad, anyone? You are the second lunatic I have encountered that claimed to eat poison ivy. The first was a high school drafting teacher. He said he showed off to other kids, but the immunity wore off later in life. I've never gotten a rash, but I only eat store bought greens. Just to keep...

Hermit's Castle and Crag Mtn. (Or M-M Section 16)

Hermit Mountain is entirely within Erving State Forest, but there are probably access problems coming from town. We saw a number of well worn foot paths leading to the M-M and Hermit Castle(?) trails, including one that had a bare signpost. From the map it appears to a pretty un-spectacular...

    Mt. Holyoke Sat 7/21

I had a pleasant drive through farm country on my way. It's been a couple decades since I saw tobacco under cultivation. It was hard not to get distracted away from the trail. There were plenty of enticing ledges, with or without views. Dr Wu appropriately re-named the string of paint blazes...

I descended it last summer and found it easy to follow.

    Flume The Other Way 6/30

Fern whacking So you're saying it is open hardwoods all the way to the summit? ;)

Selfish egomaniacs destroy fragile habitat on Katahdin.

So did some selfless hiker securely stash the parasailers' gear on the Knife Edge?

The roads less travelled - a.k.a. "lightly used" trails

I descended on the Carr Mountain Trail to the fish hatchery. My guidebook says it is unmaintained, but someone had blazed it in the last decade. It had more soil than a lot of trails do.

Best post-hike restaurants, bars, pizzerias, ice cream, etc.

Surprise! The Common Man needs a warning label. I went in there after a three day trip, hoping for some common, hearty fare like meatloaf & mashed potatoes. Portabello mushroom burgers?!?!? I didn't appreciate the irony. It is a good restaurant, but I was disappointed to...

    stove pumps and odd pots

The section with the large holes goes on the bottom. The large holes are so you can reach the stove to adjust it. The section with smaller holes on the side is the windscreen. I concur that it is a Sigg pot kit, which was made to fit a Svea stove. What do I win? :D

Peakbagger DOT com has lots of info, including cordinates. Just follow the links to the individual peaks.

    Climate Change in the Northeast

Frost warnings for the San Francisco Bay area last night. Texas is getting whalloped by a winter storm. Current temperature in Dallas is 28F, Houston is a balmy 39. In October, Buffalo had a single-day record for snowfall. The remarkable part is not the extra half inch of snow that topped the...

    Flume Peak 2980'

That's the one. There is still a fair amount of blowdown above the bend in the trail. I would guess that the maintenance crew is working their way upwards. The col doesn't appear to drop 200 feet. We plan to go up later with shovels and buckets to make the peak qualify. We have similar plans...

favorite frozen waterfalls in new england

Fletcher Cascades in Waterville Valley was quite impressive last March. I haven't seen it frozen, but Sabbaday Brook off the Kanc is probably quite a sight.

We signed in here. This seemed lower. I think the moving summit on Owl's Head still generates more interest. ;)

    Southeast Whaleback 3060'

Double Vision It looks like we have yet another summit with two cannisters. The latest entry we saw was from 10/18/03. When we talked to Steve Smith at the Mountain Wanderer (after allowing proper time for the cheese to digest) he said he knew of someone going up there the previous week. The...

    Canister?

I did it in July '05, following the ridge over from Green Mountain. To me, the summit cone and high point looked quite obvious, so I just figured that the cannister was buried under the blowdown. It was interesting the way that the Spruce HellTM came all the way up to the edge the Hubbard Brook...
