MSR model of the year - No more Evo or Pros

Thanks Tim. I was unaware that Tubbs weren't lifetime warranty (I broke a pair loaned to me by a friend, and I was able to return them for repair years after his purchase). Being a size 13 myself, I too have run into similar issues to what you are mentioning and beyond tightening the bindings...

MSR model of the year - No more Evo or Pros

While on the topic of things MSR has done to cause my waining loyalty, has anyone done the pepsi-challenge on the MSR Denali family (classic, evo) snowshoe line versus the Tubbs Flex family (Alp, Vrt, Rdg)? I'm not so much concerned with one snowshoe in the absolute sense, I know they're both...

Ice Axe and hiking pole options made by Black Diamond

This is my opinion on this as well. Thus far in my W115 (a round of the W46, plus most of the 48 and most of Maine including Katahdin), I honestly don't think there is any given peak that requires an actual ice axe***. We did the saddle trail on Katahdin in some fairly challenging conditions...

    Pemi Loop Gear...

My pack is pretty much the same for all of my summer hikes: * Osprey Talon 33 backpack (this would all easily fit in a talon 22, but I like the fit of the 33 better) * 1 bag containing first aid kit, backup headlamp, fire, random other stuff which might constitute the 10 essentials (compass...

    Lodging info please

Maple Leaf is our go-to place in Schroon (to get peaks for Elk Lake, and sometimes even out of Keene Valley since it is only a ~40 minute drive). They do have kitchenettes in most of the rooms and are traditionally reasonably priced, I highly recommend.

Sport bra alternative for winter hiking

Nicole has the Ibex merino sports bra (which was recommended by another avid winter hiking friend) and she loves it.

    2014-02-15: Abraham - Attempt

Broke trail all day until ~1900-2000 feet before we decided to turn around. Slow progress was disheartening (breaking trail through 18" of powder from the previous week from the trailhead until our turn around point 5 miles in was exhausting). However; the main reason we threw in the towel was...

Recommendations For A Larger Campground Tent

We have a Eureka Sunrise 9, it is a "5" person tent, but in reality it will sleep 4 comfortably. It is also big enough for a queen sized air mattress (maybe only full size, I can't really remember) with plenty of room on the sides for bags. The design is nice because it has eaves that keep rain...

South America Trip Recommendations (Machu Pichu)

Planning a trip to South America to do Machu Pichu via the Inca Trail. Looking for other recommendations for additional activities while "in the area". Other than wanting to do Machu Pichu I have not looked into it very much, but friends are planning a trip to South America and (in addition to...

    Kinsmans - Preferred Winter Approach??

Hiked this way today, much preferred to fishin jimmy. The 1.6 to kinsman ridge took forever, but it beats the pud the other way.

    Minus33 In Ashland, NH

I have been using one of their mid-weight merino crew tops for 2-3 years (for every single winter/cold hike) and it has held up wonderfully. One thing to keep in mind is that the sizing is a bit more casual, so if you want a "thermal" fit, consider sizing down. I also have a merino balaclava...

    Goretex proshell

I have had similarly good luck with the Mountain Hardwear Dry-Q Elite (note the "Elite", the comparison between GoreTex and Gore ProShell is the same as DryQ and DryQ Elite). A few nasty days had forced me to wear my hard shell for the majority of the day (heavy snow, wetting out my soft shell)...

The Ay Up Head Torch-13. Kinda bright.

After bike light manufactures got into the LED game (from HID and Halogen) a lot of "knock off" brands popped up. The original models were $300-400 (Nite-Rider, ILM), the knock offs were $100 (Magicshine, Spoke grenade), and now there are knock offs of the knock offs which are only $20. I...

Freedom of the New England Hills

I like this statement a lot. I know that I have personally been trying to move from a role of strong hiker to that of more of a mountaineer, so I think that this is a very good description of where I would like to go as an outdoorsman.

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Bringing this thread back from the dead because I recently realized that I never answered my own questions, so here it goes: We lucked out tremendously with weather (other than a rain storm on our intended Katahdin summit day) so we were able to go straight from Roaring to the Chimney, drop...

anyone have a gps track/wikiloc of Rainier: Paradise, Muir, Ingraham, Summit ?

Hey Chip. When we did our trip out west, I had a really good luck getting GPS tracks off peakbagger.com. I go to the peak, look at the trip reports, and some of them include GPS tracks as indicated with "(GPS Track)". The nice thing is you can read their trip report, and see their track on...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Thank you for all the great advice, I really appreciate it. It's funny, I've only been turned back once during my W46, this winter alone, I've been turned back twice in Maine. I don't think the state wants to give up its peaks too easily. We are planning on taking the marston trail for North...
