    Celts on Mt Dickey?

There's a book, 1421 that argues that the Chinese reached the NE coast and spent time inland. The building of stations to monitor astrological events (mainly lunar eclipses) is cited among the prime evidence.

    Canister stoves on airplanes

3 weeks after 9/11 I flew a pocket rocket but not the fuel canisters (jet blue), the year after that I shipped a whisperlight ahead of me rather than take the chance. If understand it right the airlines will have their own rules and then the TSA has a wide latitude on inspections and what flies...

    Odor resistant techwick?

The main difference I've noticed between Bergelene and capilene is that bergeline began to pill much faster. I've yet to wear out a capilene shirt. Disclaimer: it's been a long time since I've owned a bergelene shirt, the fabric may have been reengineered since then.

    REI Half Dome 2 Tent

A friend bought one a few years back and I stayed in it, car camping a few nights. A little bulky and heavy by backpacking standards, its no where near ultra light. That said, it's nicely detailed and well designed. The two doors make it a comfortable two person tent. For the full price she...

    New hiking poles?

No, the lever seems to be pretty solid. I would guess not being an engineer that the screw would be the weak point.

    New hiking poles?

Flicklock No problems with them but a few observations: I can get the flicklock to reliably grip about decimeter of pole section. The cam won't close above certain thickness and wont grip below certain thinness. The cam can be adjusted with a screwdriver so I've been able to set it so it works...

    Moosilauke-Sarah's 48th-Ravine Lodge?

I'll chime in and support spencer, chomp & dave. It sets a not so great precedent.

    After hike shoes

Aqua socks. Those thin soled water shoes made of mesh or open weave fabric. You can get them in increasing amounts of straps and beefyness (and expense) until they become kayak shoes. I got my last pair at campmor for $15, the pair before at kmart for $5. Lighter than a teva and very compact.

    Ideas for dehydrating food

I've dehydrated canned soups. They make a good base for trail stews and such and the preservatives gives them a longer shelf life. Salsa dehydrates really well. Now Rhihn, sour cream? How did you do that? I never thought sour cream would work well...

    you bring beers hikes?

I'll have a beer or two when hiking with Harryk. Sometimes when there's a "finish" hike I'll have a beer. These are generally summit beers and it's generally Harryk doing the bringing. Before hanging with the VFTT crowd it never really occured to me to bring beer. When I backpack I'll bring...

    kayak or canoe?

For more than one persons I would look at canoes. A double kayak is supposed to be a bit of a dog to paddle solo. I went through this choice last year. I felt the kayak was more sea worthy. If I wanted to use it for camping and traveling around Long Island as well as in the ADKs. For me it was...

    Bivy camping anyone?

Bivy/tarp and bivy/megamid is my preferred overnight setup. I can second, there's nothing like the acquired taste of bourbon and floorless camping. Spindrift and those nights where the humidity approaches 100% are about the only drawback for me and a bivy as well as some discipline about...

    experience with portable radios?

Search the forums for GMRS or Ham radio, there have been several threads over the past year. Even GMRS will not get more than 1-2 miles and requires a license. In places there are repeaters for GMRS that extend the range, I know little else about repeaters. In those past threads Ham radio has...

moose antler; leave it or keep it?

Sherpa, it wasn't meant as a slam. Earlier in the thread someone commented you'd have to have a party and show it and damn you did have a party and you did show it. Personally I thought it was a cool antler. For the record, I have deer skull (taken to use as a subject for a drawing, the sinus...

moose antler; leave it or keep it?

OK, I'll let myself get dragged into this: 1. Sherpa has had a party and (proudly) showed off his antlers. I know, I was there. 2. The "if I don't do it someone else will" is a dodge. "If I don't leave toilet paper roses above treeline someone else will". 3. Leave no Trace is an evolving...

    looking for a BIG pack

Pete- I've never even seen aluminum pack boards, are those yours or part of the trail crews gear? Even when I've seen the DEC fellow from the outpost hauling it's always been those wooden ones that look as if they were last made 50 years ago or came out of someone shop. Luke- the hut workers...

    Preventing snowballing on snowshoe crampons

Step, wack ice axe/pole against shoe, step, wack ice axe/pole against other shoe, step....... Got more than a few notches on my ice axe from doing this with crampons, I do imagine duct tape would be easier.

conditioning - running - what is good time??

The guide we had for Mnt. Baker mentioned the best training for mountaineering was carrying a backpack (i assume he meant hiking with one). On our trip this showed, the rope team of backpackers were the ones who summited

    looking for a BIG pack

Dana always comes up when huge loads are mentioned.... But you don't mention what type of hauling and hiking you will doing. Looking at trail workers and hut crews who regularly haul massive loads they use...pack boards. I guess it's because their loads are frequently oddly sized as much as the...

    Advice on the trail...no thanks!

Honestly, I think I would have a problem with an on a ranger's judgment, spill your pack for inspection, mostly for personal rights reasons that shouldn't be discussed here. The other reason I would take issue with it is paranoia, where will it stop? Solo hiking in the winter, no one with...
