AT Section Hiking, Woodstock VT to West Hartford 5/31/12

A very pretty hike indeed, and bugs haven't chewed half the leaves off yet. The white flower is a violet, perhaps Canada violet (Viola canadensis); the pink ones are maiden pinks (Dianthus deltoides), cousins to carnations.

The Split Rock hike sounds good for Friday. On Saturday we'd like to climb one of the 46'ers that Marge hasn't done yet: maybe Big Slide.

Taking a Break on the Moats

Enforced idleness stinks, doesn't it? Heal quickly... This is a good time to remind people not to remove the boot if a sprain or break is suspected. Better to tighten up the laces a bit, if anything. It will give you a better chance of walking out, if you can walk at all, and will keep the...

    I got the dehydration blues....

The pinch on the hand isn't reliable when you get older, kiddies. :( I can tell by running my tongue on the roof of my mouth, and if the front-to-back groove is pronounced, I start drinking more.

    2012 Spring Wildflower Thread

Thanks for the honeysuckle ID, nartreb. I'd always wondered what the shrub with the red twin berries was. The twinberry honeysuckle (black berries) (L. involucrata) is very common out west.

    29th ed. WMG is out

My gripe with the index is that it didn't indicate where you could find the trail description and had to search all the referenced pages to find it.

Sunapee ski slopes hiking and skiing

Pat and I headed to Sunapee yesterday to ski the leftover snow but were told by a woman at the Spruce Lodge (don't know her position) that we were not allowed. What with all the rules at Wildcat, Cannon, etc., we wanted to be good citizens and asked the question. Their website states that...

    2012 Spring Wildflower Thread

Wachusett had trailing arbutus and spring beauty blooming on 3/28. The hobblebush buds were well along in protected spots. And we found a stand of cranberries along the way.
