    Snow-free trails. Spring 2012 edition.

Kearsarge South via the Lincoln Trail: just a bit of avoidable mud. The hobblebush in the birch glades looks like it will be early-blooming.

Under the wire! Tom and Laurie Complete the Winter 48!

Good for you both! You'll remember these hikes forever. Pat and I never even thought about the W48 till this year. 3 summits last week in gorgeous weather to add to our 20 or so...ah, we might as well try. We've still never learned how to attach those crampons.

    Colorado's Rocky Mt NP

My continuing thanks for all the advice. I've been cruising around some blogs and forums regarding pine beetles, roads to trailheads, etc. etc. A previous trip to the San Juans taught us much about thunderstorms and rocky roads. Also to have a Plan B and a Plan C. Kudos to all you travelers!

    Colorado's Rocky Mt NP

Thanks, everyone. I think it won't be so crowded on the western side and I did see that the Fall River Road is one way, so to access the Chapin Trailhead we'd have to walk down the road from the visitor center which doesn't seem to be prohibited, but I'll call first. Baker Gulch looks like a...

    Colorado's Rocky Mt NP

Planning a summer trip to Colorado (staying in Grand Lake)...I am astounded at the hiking opportunities in the area. So, what are the very best hikes? Peakbagging is optional. One that looks good is a 3-fer: Chapin, Chiquita, and Ypsilon in the Mummy Range, trailhead on the Old Fall River...

Connie’s Way Ski loop (Pinkham Notch) 2/21/2012

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself despite the hardships. If you get to make a few turns, it's all good.

    Pack Monadnock 2/20/12

Out and back via Raymond Trail to S Pack and Wapack Trail to N Pack. The lower part of the mountain is almost all ice free except on north facing slopes. We barebooted most of the Raymond. The boulders and ledges are tricky without traction, but still doable if you don't mind going off-trail...

    Kahootla microspikes

Exactly, what Kevin said. They have been standard gear this winter. Not good on hard ice, you must be careful even when walking on the level. Treat them gently: I walked across the road to my car and sheared the metal loop off a small chain that connects from the rubber to an inside cleat. It...

Lauky finishes winter 48 on Washington/Monroe

Hurray for Lauky! Our spirit dogs are always with us, and I'm sure Duffy was walking beside you.

    Au Revoir, Resolution Shelter

Pat and I spent two leaky, mousy nights at Resolution Shelter when we were new to backpacking, and in the rain it was a palace for us and our dog Clio. We were still taking a half hour to get a tent set up back then. Add a wet pup to that and I'd have quit that hobby!

Wandering Around Waterville, Again, but, Just Jennings!

Yes, right along the ridge...and yes, Lost Pass is a beautiful area. I'll PM you.

Wandering Around Waterville, Again, but, Just Jennings!

Becca, have you done the Acteon Ridge bushwhack yet? I know you'd love it. We've gotten as far as Sachem Peak but haven't explored the possibility of scaling Jennings yet.

new mutt in the hiking community

Welcome to the family, Beautiful Brittney! It will be fun to hear about your progress towards the title of Superhiker. Let us know when that doghike will be. Maybe Leo will be able to join in.

A Quick Hike To Isolation, 2/11/2012

Pat, Marge, and I were lucky enough to choose 2/9 for our hike to Isolation. Not a cloud in the sky, the most beautiful glades, and an unbroken ribbon of white adorning the majestic peaks in front of us. Thanks indeed to all who went before and have helped reaffirm our mutual love of winter...

Ore. mushroom pickers found alive after 6 days

I totally get it, as a fungus and wildflower hunter. The hollow tree sounds quite appropriate as a shelter. :o

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

Luckily Leo hasn't figured out that a Lab probably could get over our 4' fence. One coyote checking us out at 5 am looked like he stood that tall. Leo loves other dogs but seeing the coyote brought him up short, quiet and just staring.
