    Aspens or Poplars?

The Quaking aspen (P.tremuloides) is distributed across the U.S. and Canada. Yes, that's one that gives such vivid yellows. It is more often found in the west in pure stands, not mixed with other trees/ The bigtooth (P.grandidentata) is limited to the northern tier of states to the east. The...

    Grand Canyon backpack, 10/8-10/14

Nice itinerary. I'm hoping for a short backpack in the GC next year. Did you keep a journal? I'm very interested in hearing about whether the Hermit Trail was scary for anyone, and trail tales in general.

Big and Little Sugar Loafs, Goose Pond and Red Hill 10/15/11

Nice pics and pleasant destinations. The grey skies add beautiful drama to the scene. On Sugarloaf we once met a group of campers, ith a few stragglers struggling in the rear. One of the kids was pretty ticked off at the leader: "Mr.Smith said we were climbing a hill. This isn't a hill, it's a...

    Whitewall Mtn. on October 10th

Wow, I'm glad you're all right! I found it spicy enough a few years ago without having Irene loosen it up. Did you stay out of the narrow section near the top of the slide? That's the part where we dislodged the most boulders. The mountain ash is putting on a particularly beautiful display...

First hike with the "New" knee

Congratulations Dave, you're back! That was quite a choice of mountain for your "first." And the knee feeling great was icing on the cake.

    2011 spring wildflower thread

My guess would be Platanthera orbiculata (large round-leaved orchid). Hooker's doesn't have bracts on the stem. I can't compare sizes, but I'll assume it's not the really large-flowered round-leaved orchid (P.macrophylla) which has flowers about 2" compared to P. orbiculata's 1" flowers.

Mt. Carr, NH Oct 8, 2011 - Bearly made it out alive / no joke

:eek::eek: What you did sounds reasonable. I hope I have the same presence of mind. We usually think this may happen in spring, not fall, when the cubs are bigger. What, no photos? ;) We were once chased down a logging road by a moose and Pat asked me if I had my camera handy.

    A Sandwich 6-pack

Beautiful area! Enjoy exploring the Whites. The Fool Killer is one of those peaks where it's good to remember the 50 foot rule: if you don't like where you are, move over fifty feet left or right. We had a horrendous time of it gaining the summit, but getting back to the trail was an easy...

    New wildflower book worth buying?

Has anyone checked into this: http://www.amazon.com/England-Flower-Societys-Flora-Angliae/dp/0300171544/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318207196&sr=1-1 It's not cheap and I can't tell if it will be too technical for me. Thanks.

Hi Steve and Cindy, Our neighbors just got a new pup and of course Pat and I got to thinking about our previous beloved doggies and Tuckerman came into our thoughts. We hope the sadness grabs you a bit less often as time goes by. Leo has gotten a lot of extra hugs lately.

    knee pain

After reading your stories, I have to consider myself lucky. I tore my posterior meniscus and hobbled around for a week before I could see the orthopedist (Sports Medicine, New England Baptist). There was a painful Baker's cyst too and what with the usual delays I didn't have surgery for 6 more...

North and South Twins, Galehead and A Close Encounter with a Moose

Glad you are OK, sad for the moose. We just spent 5 days up there (including 2 days at Galehead Hut) without seeing anything bigger than a grouse but I am always in a state of tension watching the roadsides. Yes, that new section of trail was really bad on Monday, but they still can't match...
