The wooley bears are also have the same prediction.

I do not like the winter at all, that being said I hike alot during the winter. I did buy new snowshoes last year so I guess Im ready.

We can't predict the weather 2 weeks from now with ANY certainty, and we're going to have a harsh winter? Right.

There's a 50% chance of it being true, so let's compare notes in the spring! :D

The two-week limit is for predicting the weather on a specific day.

However, this should be thought of more as a short term climate (average weather over a period of time) prediction. The El Niño Southern Oscillation occurs on an approximate 5 year cycle. It changes slowly enough to be predictable for the next few months and has effects on the world-wide short term climates, including the amounts of precip and average temps in the NE. So depending on the state of such phenomena, it is possible to predict such things as the average amount of snow this winter with some accuracy greater than chance.

Hmmmmmmm ... I think I like the Old Farmers Almanac explanation better.

I don't mind winter when I am not hiking in it. But when I have to hike in winter put me in the "I hat f**king winter" crowd. Snow is great for looking at and having the occasional short gambol through. I even don't mind shoveling. I just hate walking on/in/through it.

whats not to like?

No mosquitoes, no bears (haha), no crowds (kind of), fresh food doesn't spoil, hot tea in thd thermoss and sliding on skis for fun. Love the winter.

Winter? The pluses add up to much more than the minuses. No bugs, heat and humidity are manageable, snowshoeing is easier than hiking rough trails, food keeps until mealtime, you can drag most of your gear on a sled, camp where you want; in many ways more comfortable than summer, plus the views really open up, few to no tourists if you know to go off their routes.
Not to start the annual rant, but the only thing I find truly annoying about winter is postholers.
There, someone said it. Since we all agree with that on this site could we please now leave them to their misery? But perhaps the best thing is to be warm and dry in winter, but still outdoors.

Is it me or did the I hate postholers topic start early this year? I like postholers they are people too and it makes me feel good when I snowshoe by them. It reminds me of a day when I knew nothing about hiking in the winter, a simpler time when my ignorance was only matched by determination to make the summit regardless of how much I was suffering.:D

Great Avatar W. First I thought it was a picture of me but then I remembered
I never forget my poles...
