    Women's SPECIFIC Gear (Especially Pants)

It's never worth spending that much extra for something with suspenders, whether you're a guy or girl... when you can just go to the thrift store and get a pair of suspenders for like 5 bucks. If you're lucky, they'll even have some in the rainbow or piano key variety. :)

    Women's SPECIFIC Gear (Especially Pants)

Have you tried looking online? Many gear stores don't have a fraction of what's available in stock- it just isn't worth it to stock items that there is little demand for. But if you check their websites, they tend to have a lot more options available. I have a friend who has a pair of...

Gray, Skylight, and Marcy 1/11/12 (Adirondacks)

Click Here For More Photos Still needed Gray and Skylight for my winter 46, so I set out early yesterday to climb both. Started from the Loj in the darkness, took the Old Marcy Dam Trail and made it to Marcy Dam just in time to watch the clouds glow pink as the sun rose. First time to Marcy...

Now if only we could get similar rules in place for online message boards... :)

    Redfield and Cliff 1/9/12 (Adirondacks)

Click Here For More Photos Knocked off two more peaks in my quest to finish the Winter 46 yesterday. These are some of the more remote ones I've day hiked, and it certainly was a long day- took me pretty much 12 hours exactly from when I left the parking lot to when I returned. Started at...

    Vodka bottle

Actually, I think glass containers are only banned in the High Peaks Wilderness Area. I'm fairly certain they are legal in other Wilderness Areas. There are plans to adjust the law to ban glass in all wilderness areas (the UMPs call for it) but as far as I know, it hasn't been done yet. They...

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

Typically, full time trail maintainers that work for either the Federal Government or a particular State focus mainly on blowdown removal and side-cutting. They do get involved occasionally in large-scale specific projects, but it's generally not their primary job responsibility. Large...

I think he's just looking for structures on the summits... :)

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

I'm not very familiar with how the White Mountain NF is managed, but I do know that just because something is in a Wilderness Area, doesn't necessarily preclude the presence of bridges (even in Federally-designated wilderness). Case in point- the Big Branch Wilderness in Vermont has a...

Hedgehog and Lower Wolf Jaw 1/6/12 (Adirondacks)

There was about 8 inches exactly on the summit- any higher, and I would've needed to use snowshoes as per the High Peaks regulations. :) That was on LWJ, though- since UWJ is a tad bit higher, there was probably a tad bit more snow up there. Total time on the trail was a little more than 6 hours.

    Packing / folding saws recommendations.

Have you ever used a Swedish brush ax? I've used one before- they work great for cutting through smaller stuff. They've got a thin blade that's much sharper than your standard ax, and makes nice clean cuts...

Hedgehog and Lower Wolf Jaw 1/6/12 (Adirondacks)

Click Here For More Pictures Decided to spend the afternoon filling in some trails on my red line map. I'd never climbed Lower Wolf Jaw from Keene before, so this was my planned destination. Ran into Forest Ranger vanLaer at the trailhead, chatted with him for a couple of minutes- he seems...

    Packing / folding saws recommendations.

I certainly wouldn't ever use it for trailwork. I just carry it for cutting up firewood, usually stuff that's only about 2-4 inches in diameter. :)

    Pitchoff 1/4/12 (Adirondacks)

Well, I've done very little in the Whites (pretty much just Washington and the Welch/Dickey loop). We'll have to trade places. :)

    Packing / folding saws recommendations.

If I were going solo with the intent of doing trail work in winter, I'd probably stick to using the ax for blowdown removal. I do have a one-man crosscut though, which has second handle on the far end so it can be used by two people (similar to this). That'd probably be my weapon of choice for...

    Pitchoff 1/4/12 (Adirondacks)

Someone had signed in a few days before to do Pitchoff, then Cascade and Porter, then descend to the Garden. Definitely a pretty neat little through trip. :)

4Ks with Structures (Past or Present)

On Ellen, the top of the chair lift for the ski area is pretty much right smack on the summit. I think there's also a little warming hut for ski patrol up there as well.

4Ks with Structures (Past or Present)

The stone shelter on Marcy wasn't just removed- it was blown up. It was supposed to be an emergency shelter, but hikers were purposefully camping in it, rather than just using it during emergencies. Plus it was getting used as a bathroom pretty regularly during the summer months (for #2, of...

    Sewards Gate?

Nope, there was definitely 2 or 3 more posts in this thread. They might've all been by the same author- perhaps he/she deleted them.
