Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

I think in determining whether or not Coyotes pose a threat to humans, it's important to understand how their decision making process works. In modelling wildlife behavior, wildlife biologists often use something called an "energy budget." Basically, the idea is that animals have a certain...

You and I can both readily walk on our own two feet, and we've already pretty clear in our discussion that access to the woods is a complex matter with differing viewpoints that people can feel pretty passionate about. :) Now imagine what it must feel like to not be able to walk on your own two...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Do you honestly believe that a enforcement officer is going to look kindly upon you after you've forced him or her to come all the way up the the mountain in winter to deal with your stubbornness? Forcing them to do so is a great way to get them to view you as being "uncooperative" right of the...

As for the fees to park at the Loj, there is another possible reason for them as well- it limits backcountry use of Marcy Dam. I know this sounds kind of contrary to how wilderness resources ought to be managed, and I agree that under most conditions, we shouldn't be doing anything to limit...

Getting towed near Mt. Tremont trailhead

Many rural municipalities in the northeast have winter parking restrictions that are "blanket restrictions" that apply to all roads in winter, and there doesn't necessarily need to be signs posted on the roads to inform the public of the restriction (although often you'll see the regulation...

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

Haha yep, I've had them circle around me while hiking in the winter before. Doesn't happen often, but it's pretty neat when it does. :) A few friends and I were climbing Jenkins Mountain in the Adirondacks a few years ago, the coyotes followed us all the way to the summit and back down...

Oh no you didn't. ;) I think we need to get some facts straight. :) First, South Meadows Road is not closed to force hikers to pay the ADK to park. It'd closed because it's a dirt road that is only used by hikers. There just isn't any economical justification for maintaining it in...

    Marcy Dam

This would require a constitutional amendment (necessary any time NYS wants to sell, give away, or exchange land in the Adirondacks). The process for this is lengthy (must pass two successive meetings of the state senate, then go to a public vote where it most be approved by 2/3rds of the...

    Marcy Dam

I'm sure that a new bridge will be built across Marcy Brook at some point. It's a pretty major trail, and the potential impacts of not having safe crossing far outweigh the impacts of having a bridge, given how much use the trail gets. There simply wasn't time to do so this fall, what with all...

    Marcy Dam

I hadn't heard that the plan was scrapped, but it wouldn't surprise me- it's been over 10 years I think since the plan was made, and we haven't seen so much as one shovel's worth of dirt moved. It seems likely that such a project would require a constitutional amendment at the very least- a...

It's been raining all day today, and fairly warm, so the water in the brook is sure to be up. If you want to avoid the crossing, you can approach from South Meadows instead- it's a longer hike in, but it's still fairly flat. We all might as well start getting used to the South Meadows approach...

46W on Macomb, S. Dix, Hough, and Dix 1/22/12 (Adirondacks)

Click Here For More Photos Well, I did it. At the culmination of 30 trips into the woods, 49 High Peaks summited, 346 miles hiked/snowshoed/skied/cramponed, and 109,600 vertical feet climbed, I finished the Winter 46 this past Sunday at 2:30 in the afternoon when I reached the summit of Dix...

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

I'm sure it's doable with the right about of skill and perseverance. I've hiked the Northville-Placid Trail in winter, but in sections. A few friends and I originally attempted to snowshoe it in one 2 week trip, but our plans turned out to be too ambitious. It took us 28 days of hiking...

    Over mitts

I have the OR Alti mitts, with just regular polyester insulation. Even though they don't have primaloft, my fingers haven't gotten cold once in them, even in sub-zero conditions.

    Over mitts

Came here to also recommend the OR gore-tex mitts. Mine aren't quite "many years old," but they area amazing nonetheless. My fingers never get cold in them. They have removable liners, so you could easily use the shells with whatever glove/mitten you desire.

    South side trail- John Brooks

Officially, this trail is still closed by the DEC. Hikers are still allowed to attempt to hike it, but they should do so knowing that there is no guarantee that the trail is passable. I say attempt, because a friend of mine tried to hike this trail this fall, and said that the trail "simply...

    Stratton VT snowshoeing?

From the NG map, it seems that the winter parking area is where the Grout Pond Road is, a little bit less than a mile east of where the AT crosses the road.

    Stratton VT snowshoeing?

The National Geographic Green Mountain South map covers that area. You should be able to find it for sale at any gear store in the northeast. The Lye Brook Wilderness is right near there, but access could be difficult in winter, since the main access road to the south isn't plowed... EDIT...
